Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey is one of six London boroughs where new armed police patrols will be deployed to patrol shooting hotspots.

Whilst Harringay along with Crouch End and Muswell Hill is unlikely to be affected, the patrols will not be many miles from home.

Other boroughs included will be Newham, Hackney, Brent, Lambeth and Southwark.

Operation Viper, involving 50 officers, will target gun crime in these areas with marksmen accompanying officers on traffic stops along with weapons sweeps and raids.

Scotland Yard said the majority of shootings last year involved handguns. Among victims 42% had links to gangs, and half of victims had links to drug dealing.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe told journalists “Clearly in some areas there is a gang element to it but that doesn’t account for all of it. The fact that we’re seeing it across the country in the big cities probably indicates that we’re talking about more supply.”

I've read it REALLY carefully and for all the waffle about "protect" the public there are two stark facts, gun crime is down on five years ago and guns are incredibly rare in Britain. This is versus one point closely related to "thought crime" and that is that there are more guns available recently than there have been. The point about an uptick in gun crime in the past three months is statistically insignificant and just too convenient to be taken seriously (what about the last four months or the last month?). This is then used to justify openly armed police on London's high streets.

I lived in Belgium for nine years and every policeman was armed. Didn't worry me one bit.

JohnD. I lived in UK for years and not every policeman was armed. Didn't worry me one bit.
