Glen. On the oak flooring we got ours from Builders Depot near New Southgate Station and had a guy whose number you can get off me for fitting. We used two types upstairs and down stairs both at different prices and dept of oak surface. You are welcome to come over and have a shufty.

I also have a  few m2 left that I was going to ebay if that is any use.

Thanks Justin, they were one of the 3 I have on my list (Jordan Andrews +Flooring Supplies uK Edmonton) .  Just checking if anyone had other suggestions - cheers glen

I would avoid the Floor Shop in Bounds Green. First impression was good, price seemed right and we took a sample for further consideration. They visited us to provide us with an estimate which was substantially higher. One of the proprietors who came to measure our place had a really unpleasant 'take it or leave it' attitude. To add, we had an installer examine the sample and advised us against it due to the poor quality of materials. I would however highly recommend these people: https://www.flooringsuppliescentre.co.uk incredibly nice, knowledgeable and superb selection. I'd encourage you to visit their warehouse. Its immense, and packed with just about everything you need for parquet flooring.

We were also considering engineering but settled on solid wood parquet. The difference in terms of longevity and look and feel is enormous. I would definitely consider solid also because of the rising popularity of herringbone engineered which seems to be everywhere - from Starbucks to Carphone Warehouse... You are welcome to have a look at ours if you are in 2 minds.

Thanks for the tips

Slight hijack--as getting a slate roof back on the house is on my wish list. Sorry I cant answer any of your queries helpfully.

Surely the slate used in 1895 came from Wales. Is that no longer available and the only option is Canadian?

I've done some research and approximate prices as follows,

Welsh £5
Canadian £2.20
Spanish £1.50 - £1.90

Basically Canadian Glendyne is the next best to Welsh, and their are some good Spanish slates and some not sot so good.
The best quality slate will be smooth and straight, if its pitted then the pits are where it will start to fail. Lots of info on the net but hope this helps

It does. I have one bit of the original slate roofing left from the 1895 build on the front door awning and had planned one day to take a piece of that and use it as reference. What might help is over the years till this happens to keep an eye out for a deal on the Welsh slate.

Thanks and good luck! This has been helpful and appreciated.  Sorry I know nil about flooring, I stuck with the pine.  My preference would be oak and if the original weren't in my house I'd be looking for that info as well. I knew a guy in Italy with a family wood business and he got us our flooring there--it was very good. I wish I knew someone like him in London/UK.

hi Mavic,
I tried sourcing all types of different slate for a very fussy customer recently.
In the end, down to small size needed and the difficulty of getting small numbers( front roof only) we opted for Spanish duquesa available from roofing superstore, they ended up being the closest in colour, texture and dimensions, not to mention one of the cheapest. Alternatively go reclaimed.
As far as other items, give me a ring and give me a few details and I will let you know if any of my contacts are appropriate..

Thanks Dezai, I went with Spanish Delcarmen first. There are a few grades of Delcarmen and this is one down from the best, Ultra.
