Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi,

I am writing a quick recommendation for our fire place installer Jon, he has installed 4 fireplaces for us over the years, both gas and solid fuels. His workmanship is of excellent quality and he is very tidy, so I have no problem in recommending him, contact details below.

any pictures?

I just have this one with me at the moment, I also have the pictures of the construction phases, just in case our building control guy wants them. Just the skirting board and gas burner are missing in this photo.

You see Nick that your reference needs something visual :-)

Hi Nick,

I am in the process of getting permission from the council to install a fireplace. Would be appreciated if you could share some experience of yours if your property is a council-owned property as well?

Thanks

Zoe

Hi Neil

We have used this guy twice to restore original fireplaces and get a reproduction one. He also can get reproduction surrounds and hearths:

86 Lower Clapton Road, London, Greater London
Don't be put off by the run down shop he is a really nice guy and has quite a few original ones to choose from.

Depending on what you need to be done, from our experience these are the kind of costs you will need to think about

If you wish or need to put in a flue liner this is the expensive bit:

15 Metres Multi-fuel flue liner is ~£400

Gather (collects the smoke/fumes and guides them into the flue liner)- ~£400

closure plate £15, a top clamp £10 & a chimney cowl £40

Fitting cost £250

Total flue lining -£1325

For putting in the fireplace the costs are roughly the following

Installation cost for a fireplace fitting is not very high; Gas fire £250
Solid fuel fitting £200

A basic gas burner is around £150, more if you want a remote controlled one.

We picked up a metal insert (the metal part of the fire) from gumtree for £120 and a reclaimed and restored one for around £300.

A slate hearth depends on size say £100-300

The surround will depend on the material, wood, marble, sandstone £70- up to what ever you would like to pay.

You may also have some additional costs of opening up the fireplace if it is blocked off, reinstating a chimney pot and running a gas pipe to the fireplace (a plumber would charge 70-250 depending on the difficulty and where your nearist gas pipe is).

Hope this helps

I would also be keen to hear of any good places to get a new fireplace. I know the Architectural Forum on Essex road has a great selection but I feel it may be overpriced

We have got one retored insert from someone selling on GumTree, the one in the picture above is an original that we bought and had restored by The Fireplace Shop (AKA Great fireplaces), the address is given in a reply above. His prices are good and we had look at a number of places al around london. There are some other posts on this site about people finding reclaimed fireplaces. It is probably better to get a surround made up to your preferences rather than trying to find an original.

Thanks Nick, will definitely check out the fireplace shop - appreciated.
