Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

hedge planting at Ducketts Common - this Saturday morning-[UPDATED] was cancelled

We have been awarded a grant of £2,500 from the Tree Council to plant a hedge around Ducketts Common.

The hedge will be 800m in length and will consist of 5600 hedge plants (75% Hawthorn, 10% Blackthorn, 5% Hawthorn, 5% Dog Rose and 5% Guelder Rose) and 40 hedge trees (20 Field Maple, 10 Rowan and 10 Crab Apple)

The hedge will be slightly set back from the railings and will be maintained so that it does not grow above the height of the railings. It will take several years to fully mature.

One of the requirements of the grant is that local residents are involved in the planting. The Haringey Parks department have already started planting and it will take several days. They hope that some people can help out on Saturday morning – please feel free to come along anytime between 9am and midday.

The next meeting of the Friends of Ducketts Common is on Wednesday 17th February at 7pm at  14a Willoughby Road, London N8 0HR (next to the Citizens Advice Bureau) and we will be planting a ten tree apple orchard at 11am on Thursday 25th February – more details to follow soon.

That's brilliant news, I really like the sound of the mini orchard too.

I will pop my head in tomorrow if I can. I hope others will too. Great work, and I would say a very big well done to all involved!

If I may, I would also like to pop along to the meeting on the 17th to offer my support and get a better handle on the plans. You never know, I might have the odd bit of info to throw in having been here so long.

I know a few of the solicitors along Willoughby Road, so that could come in handy for future fundraising etc.
everyone is very welcome to attend our meetings
....forgot to say, that it is the stipulation of our grant that children are not allowed to be involved in the planting
And yet clicking through to their website I see a picture of a child climbing a tree.

I will tell my children that the reason they can't go and help plant the hedges on the common at the bottom of our street tomorrow is because the fascists who provided some of the means to do this decided that they would exclude children. Disgusted.
the irony...
Hedge Fund(def.): a fund, usually used by wealthy individuals and institutions, allowed to use aggressive strategies unavailable to mutual funds. Limited by law to a maximum of 100 investors, minimum of £250,000 per investor. Among the blackthorn, hawthorn and rowan we expect a brave show of traditional shrubs: arbitrage, swaps, leverage and derivatives. Oh, and a splash of short selling. How else can the commons be profitably enclosed?
is there something wrong with their website? i keep getting page cannot be displayed?
Try this one.

Thanks !
now updated, sorry
From the Ducketts website: Dec 2009: we have received £30,000 from the London Marathon Trust for an outdoor gym.

Was there any consultation with local residents on this? Don't remember seeing this on HOL. Are there any further details?
it was discussed widely within the Friends Group and we fully supported it - over 100 local people recieve the minutes from our meetings and it was fully documented within the minutes

Matt, would you like me to add your email address to the Friends Group email list?

no further details yet, as there might be possibility that this proposal wil be enlarged (which would require additonal funding) and this would then go to local consultation
