Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello,

Does anyone know where you can get reclaimed stair spindles? We are renovating our staircase and in stripping off layers of paint have discovered that at least 18 of the original spindles are missing.

The wood appears to be quite dark and I can't find the spindle design anywhere online at any of the companies promising to reproduce spindles.

Does anyone know:

1) The name of this spindle design;

2) What wood it might be;

3) Anywhere I might be able to find reclaimed ones;

4) If not, somewhere that can make reproduction ones at a reasonable price?

Any help appreciated! I've put a picture of the spindles we've just stripped (the wood ones) alongside the later additions (still painted).

Thanks

Hi, I had some missing spindles and my brother took one to a place where they made exact replicas. I think they were in New Southgate, but will ask my brother and get back to you.

Might this thread help?

Ah, thank you both.

Hugh, does that timber place (is it Thomerson's?) still exist? I know there have been a couple of shop changes down in Crouch End....

Yes, it's still there. There were rumours that it was going to close, but I checked and apparently all is safe. I hope so because the survival of well established useful shops like this is the true test of a town centre's health rather than the coffeebarcount.

The Thomerson family is related to the folks of Bishop's Hardware store by marriage - now that's an engrained local retail scene.

Thanks Hugh. I might give them a call this week unless anyone else knows where you'd find a load of matching reclaimed spindles!

Hi, I had the same problem three or four years ago. I used a fantastic man, Brian Oliver, up in New Southgate. He made me the exact copies, I took him one of mine, as well as the Bull Noses for the outside of the stair. He made them in fresh pine which I stained with wood stain - experiment with best colour match on off cuts. He may still be alive? 02083611714, the industrial estate opposite tops tiles,Brooke way I think.

Good luck Dom

I think that is probably the guy who did ours, he did a great job.

For somewhere a little closer, theres Muswell Hill Joinery just around the corner at 61 High St, Hornsey, N8 7QB. They made some copies for us, it was a couple of years ago but was about £7 per spindle i think.

Thanks everyone - will check out some of these options and hope I am not bankrupt with a nice staircase....!

Good to hear, I always hear good things about them.
