Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Well I have just been up the church tower in Hornsey. What a great experience, and really pleased to see so many people there.  Got chatting to a fella aged 79 who has lived in Hornsey since he was three months old, but said this was actually his first time up the tower! Heard about what it used to be like (green fields and cows), and apparently there's a tunnel underground from Wightman Road under the railway that comes out near here. Anyone heard of that?

I hope today was a success for FOHCT (Friends of Hornsey Church Tower). There is a coach trip to Kent in May of anyone is interested, looking at some other towers and turrets........

Sadly most of the fields would have been long gone by the early thirties. There's no tunnel under the Great Northern, but it does seem like there's a local folk memory of a carriageway that used to run to Harringay House, under the railway when it was first built in the early 1850s. At that time it was just a two track rail line. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, it was a well developed railway goods and marshalling yard and the track running beneath it was just a memory. You can see it here.

Yes, you must be right about the tunnel as I had heard that from someone else, too.
