Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The following just into my inbox from our local boys in blue:

Police in Islington are urging the public to be vigilant after a woman was tricked out of more than £500 in a telephone bank card scam.
At approximately 13:00hrs on Thursday 3 September, the 34-year-old woman received a telephone call at home from a man claiming to be from her bank.

The man, who gave an Asian name, told her that money had been stolen from her bank account explaining that money had been withdrawn from her account in various different locations.

During the course of their conversation, the victim was instructed to call her "bank" back via a telephone number which began '0845'.

The suspect also requested her pin number and advised the victim that someone would attend her address to collect her bankcard.

A short while later, a man arrived at the victim's address in N1 to collect her bank card.

The victim later realised that her card had been used for a shopping spree with the suspect(s) spending over £500.

This is the second incident of this kind to occur in Islington. The day before, on Wednesday 2 September, something similar happened to a woman in the N7 area however she refused to reveal her pin number and checked whether the caller was legitimate by telephoning her bank.

Police in Islington believe at least 15 other similar incidents have taken place across London and are asking people to be vigilant.

Advice to the public:

· Do not give your bank card pin number out over the telephone - banks/building societies will never ask for your pin number over the telephone.

· Do not give your bank card to anyone coming to your door - banks will always ask you to destroy the card.

· Do not give any of your bank details out over the phone if you are not 100 percent sure the caller is genuine. Check that the caller is legitimate by calling your bank directly or visiting your local branch.
