<p>I dislike coincidences but was intrigued to see that the first licensee was one William Allen. The other William Allen , the Quaker and anti slaver, arrived a couple of generations later and noted that the establishment was close to Wilberforce Road. I wondered if there was a connection.</p>

<p>I just found another image of the Sluice House from around 1790. I think this is an older building than the one depicted in most of the later pictures.</p>
<p>I note from the caption that the tavern was also called the <em>Three Nightingales</em>.</p>
<p>Note also that no reference is made to <em>Eel Pie House</em>, but there is a sign advertising those wares with which the establishment became eponymous.</p>
