Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This from the Stroud Green Residents' Association Yahoo Group:

The top floor of Stroud Green library (just the other side of Harringay Railway Station) was included in the overall refurbishment of the building that was undertaken two or three years ago. Since then it has remained unused.

(in 1901 the large flat was intended for the use of the Borough Librarian. In the latter years of the last century it was let out, but suffered from vandalism. It has been empty and unoccupied since about 2000).

Although the library is unlikely to expand up there in the short term, there is a possibility that the council might allow the spacious top floor to be used for community purposes, for which in many ways, it seems ideally placed.

Do you have any ideas or suggestions?

It strikes me that when the little 'uns invade, any thoughts of a quiet space to work, read or think must go out of the window, so it would be a good idea to either refurbish the first floor as a space for workshops and events (maybe get some more dancing and drama going up there) or make the first floor the computer /quiet area so that when the kids come in for an activity, there is somewhere for people to get away from it all. Kids homework clubs could also operate out of a such a space for a couple of hours after school.

Do you know where the RA wants the suggestions sent to? On their site or to a specific person?
Since Google are continuing to googleize, at the rate of 3,000 pages per hour, all books published up to 1st January '09 (including out-of-print), probably even the ground floor of SGL will soon be free of those useless book stacks. Alas, poor Carnegie - I knew him well. There will be no place to escape from those marauding hordes of little 'uns.
IMHO, suggestions should be both broadcast here (&/or the SGRA site) and sent to Diana Edmonds MBE, who is Head of Libraries.

Diana Edmonds and her team have done wonderful work with the library service, which represents at least one area where the council can take real pride. Diana's engagement came after she was brought in as part of Instant Library Ltd. and it goes to show what a difference can be made with the appointment of the right person.

This is the webpage for the Library Service.

How about using it for poetry, story telling sessions etc? The spoken word, performance.
Space at Stroud Green library up for grabsHaringey Independent

A FORMER flat above Stroud Green Library looks set to be tranformed into an art studio and community centre.

Haringey Council is looking for groups and local artists to take advantage of the space in the former librarian's flat, in Quernmore Road.

It was lived in up until 1963, and for the past four-and-a-half decades has been used for storage and as a staff room for the library.

Councillor Dhiren Basu, in charge of leisure and culture, said Haringey Council is trying to make best use of the spaces it has available.

The council has suggested the four rooms, kitchen, and roof terrace, would make an ideal art studio combined with a community centre.

Negotiations are already underway with several artists, but anyone interested in renting out the space can contact the library on 0208 489 8776
Hi

I would definitely be interested in running a regular Ashtanga Yoga class from there.

I will call to enquire about going around to see the actual space shortly.

Regards
