Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I am looking for a new place in the area, not a big one, just for one person as the current place is just a hell hole with Landlord/property management and Council all claiming they have done what they can do. Wooden uninsulated floor 4x5 m overhead and instead of 1 person 2 adult +toddler+baby. The house has many crack one wonders about the safety in the longer run. They move their furniture on a naked floor several times a day mostly from midday until well past 1 am everyday. On top of it little toddler now running around as if she is on a bouncing castle and baby more and more crying in addition to the toddler falling, crying and having regular tantrums. Of course children are children, but a shared property is not the right place. They have no room to sleep at normal bed times.

Landlord most of the time ignoring me.

Managing company is only confirming they did what they could do (more than a year after the man brought his partner and then baby)

At Haringay council the noise department is only stalling and court approved recording devices have a waiting list of 6 months and had several visits from their staff at night, but they have no power. The recently in the ceiling re-appearing cracks prove that this is an old problem regularly painted over (there are many more in the rest of the house)

I am told nothing when Haringay Council is re-locating neighbours.

This is the short version of the nightmare I am going through.

Does anybody know a contact name at social services I could contact to make clear to them what their delay does to me?

I really are desperately to get out of this hell hole.

Any information who is in charge of social services dealing with families who should be evicted but the Council wants to re-locate would be much appreciated.

I have not created this situation. Sign a contract for an accommodation for one person and bring shortly after partner and child and then go on and have another child? And their untimely behaviour is not only effecting me, although I am the main victim of the situation. It makes my room uninhabitable. Yes, the landlord did finally serve them with eviction but now the Council who wanted to take care of them is DOING NOTHING.

Sorry, but after more then six months putting up and being sympathetic it is time to see cause and effect.

If they're being evicted that's problem solved as far as you're concerned, surely
The landlord should at the very least put some carpet down don't you think?

exactly, but didn't, and does not acknowledge any responsibility and the Council hasn't re-housed them either after months

For the first time in 10 years, I heartily disagree with John's take on something.

My abiding memories from 38-40 years ago of an ever so friendly couple and toddlers less than 2 metres above my head in an uncarpeted, "unconverted" and uninsulated  1st floor Umfreville Road flat have left me with a life-long aversion to hyperactive toddlers and younger squallers anywhere within a 20-metre radius of my person.

Presumably your neighbours are living in one room in an HMO because they are unable to afford anything better? If they're evicted, where will they go? Under the railway bridge on Green Lanes?

"And if a family can not afford a suitable accommodation for themselves and a child, they should hold on with having another till they are in a better position to provide for those kids." <- let's just restrict child benefit to the first two children shall we? Oh... wait...

I cannot believe I'm the one you think is being "unreasonable" here. A single woman is trying to have a family evicted because she won'tcan't put herself in their shoes with regards to the noise generated by a family in a one bed flat. If there are no children, who will look after her when she's old? If we have to be financially well off before we even contemplate children can you see where that will lead. A bit of tolerance of families is all that's required.

Exactly, that is the point.

Children are no blanco cheque to do what you like without any regards for others.

I lived next to families with children previously, but both the accommodation and their behaviour was never a problem. This time it is different.

Just read this and really feel for the author. Not saying it's an exact parallel of your situation but the sheer number of comments makes you realise how important this issue is. As someone writes ' It's hard to describe the effect of living in such an environment, all the anger and the helplessness, truly it's hard to grasp the horror unless you've experienced it.

Also I didn't read 1 negative comment, a lot are amusing & some useful suggestions too. It may not help you now but message to take is it wont last forever.

Really hope something works out soon for you.

Thank you for sharing it.

I sadly deal with more than 1 party and have no official say in it.

Become a councillor, but I guess their are flooded with requests for help.

In theory I could take them to the small claims court to asked for a court ruling NOT to do something. Court fee is over £200 without any guarantee of the outcome and it takes months to get a hearing date anyway. Without a sound recording admissable for court it's useless and Haringay Council has a 6 months waiting list for recording equipment, which their noise officers told me straight away.

My upstairs neighbours are shift workers.  Their flat was renovated at all times of the night and day and weekend including loud cutting/drilling through external walls that shook the whole building and caused some damage to my kitchen.  They have no carpet and scrape their chairs at 5am.  Not long after they moved in I had my kitchen replaced over the course of three days, 9-5 as allowed by my lease.  On the first day the neighbour complained about the noise several times and said her boyfriend was trying to sleep!  They repaid me by banging my ceilign loudly at 15 minute intervals for a couple of hours every night for a few nights in a row.  Of course they have no idea what their landlord put me through....
