Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

People are usually more prone to illness during the winter season. Colder weather associated with the winter can cause serious health complications. Here are some useful tips to help you stay well over the winter, including information about services you can use.

NHS Choices
NHS Choices has lots of advice that you can use to keep you and your family well this winter. Find out more: www.nhs.uk/winterhealth

Get your flu jab
The flu vaccination is particularly important for those who are at increased risk from the effects of flu, including over 65s, pregnant women, young children and those with long term health conditions.

Children can receive their vaccination as a nasal spray. Adults can get the vaccine via their GP or at many local pharmacies.  Find out more: www.nhs.uk/staywell

See a pharmacist early
If you start to feel unwell, even if it’s just a cough or cold, don’t wait until it gets more serious; get help from your pharmacist. The sooner you get advice the better. Visit Haringey CCG’s website for information on the opening times for Haringey pharmacies open over the Christmas bank holidays.

Evening and weekend GP appointments
If you are feeling unwell and need to see a GP or nurse in the evenings or on a weekend, including public holidays, you can book an appointment at a primary care hub in Haringey. Appointments are available:

• 6:30pm-8:30pm on weekdays
• 8:00am-8:00pm at the weekend

To make an appointment, you can call your own GP practice during normal business hours or call 0330 053 9499 during the hub opening hours.

Dial 111
If you urgently need medical help or advice but it's not a life-threatening situation or a 999 emergency use the NHS 111 service. The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.

Thanks. Most of this is helpful but the jury is still out on flu jabs and medicines for coughs and colds - pros and cons with both. One of the reasons for more illness in the winter is people's tendency to sit around in over-heated rooms. So why not go for a swim or a country walk instead?
