Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

An interesting talk by the Wellcome Foundation with links to a fascinating local history resource.

By way of an example I'm attaching a randomly picked 1909 health report from the Borough of Hornsey (which included about half of Harringay. In it you'll read the shocking statistic that the number of home workers in the borough had increased by 14 to a total of 77 (i think that today we must have about that number in my road). You'll also note evidence of the war I referred to before between the Council and local residents over how the neighbourhood name was spelt. (I'm glad to say the people won - that is until fairly recently when the new administration picked up this age old municipal obsession with respelling or renaming our neighbourhood).

This talk is the latest in the Insight series and uncovers the content of London's Pulse, a major digital resource for the history of London. This event will be themed around North London and will illustrate the health of the area over the last 150 years, drawing upon the fascinating content of London’s Pulse and the collections of Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre.

Speakers: Tudor Allen, Senior Officer, Archives, London Borough of Camden and Ross MacFarlane, Research Engagement Officer, Wellcome Library,

Venue: Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre, 32-38 Theobalds Rd, London, WC1X 8PA

Tickets will be available to book online on 28 March at 11.00
