Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

What are these old metal things in the Harringay passage? Chimneys? Lamp-posts?

Hi all,

Walking along the Harringay passage I often look I wonder what these are? They seem to be part of something historical system and not in use.

First picture is a kind of squarish metal tower. Someone thought they are chimneys but I checked they are not connected to the houses. They appear between every other street or so. 

Are they part of the sewage system, which I read somewhere is (or was) under the passage. To let air out?

The thing in the second picture looks a bit like a very very high lamp post. They appear somewhat less frequently. Are they old gas-lamps, or perhaps also part of the sewage system?

Anyone who knows?

Or has some interesting theories... :)

A little more on the construction sewer that these pipes serve here. I think they're commonly referred to as stench pipes.

Would you also happen to know whether, the square pipes in my photo (which are attached to houses) serve the same purpose as the round pipe towers (which are situated in the middle of the passage stretches)?

Also, are these things still in use, or is the sewage system moved/upgraded?

Googling "stench pipe" i came across an interesting nick-name : "stink pipes"

I'm going to guess yes, but I'm not sure to be honest. Do you have a picture of the top of the square pipe?

Hi again

So here is a picture of the top of one of the square pipes.

Could it be that the round pipes were built 1886, like the bollards with that year marked on, when there were hardly any house and then the square pipes during the remake of 1908, when the houses were built up and thus cheaper to attach to houses than constructing free-standing poles? 

There seem to be considerably more square pipes than round pipes. Read somewhere there are only four round pipes in the passage, so maybe they needed to increase the capacity during the 1908 upgrade ...?

It is a possibility at least, and fun thinking about things you pass every day... and of course now I already started to spot other poles elsewhere, e.g. close to Salisbury pub down St Anns road, guess they will haunt me for some time now...

I would like to know who is responsible for them as the one outside my house is very rusty yet could look resplendant given a lick of green paint.

The need to do this (give them a bit of a spruce up) was identified in an audit of Harringay Passage way back in 2012. See page 4 of the audit report attached to the thread below (as a PDF at the foot of the very first post)
