Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This picture appeared in a Victorian Weekly Journal, The Pictorial on 31 January 1880. From the report in the Evening Standard, attached in a comment below, it's clear that we are looking at the block along Seven Sisters Road up up Stroud Green Road. Originally it also included a row of shop-houses along Station Place. This row was demolished to improve local transport flow in the 1930s.

Islington Council (or Vestry, as it was then known) accounts published in the Islington Gazette of April 2 1880 show monies paid to a 'Mr Maltby' in respect of photographs of this accident. I assume those might still exist in the hands of Islington's Archives or the London Metropolitan Archives.

The Google Maps image below shows the location today.

Fascinating. But ... It is still not clear to me what is the location of the ‘fallen houses’ although I get the general area. Can you post a copy of the newspaper article?

As an aside, I reflect on the amount of work required to produce the image; artist sent to the scene, artist draws scene ... guess not a five minute job ... drawing then sent to an engraver ... again, not a five minute job, engraved plate then sent to printer. A lot of coordination of tasks and deadlines all the while. Impressive.

Hmmm - in the 60s you were more likely to find 'fallen women' there, as they used to say.

I notice hey were being built but the men got clear in time.

mt, the location is the buildings on the pointy bit in the middle of the photo above. The newspaper article I have wa attached to my last comment (not the main article).

Writing another post earlier today, I realised that all the building in the bottom right hand corner of the photo are in Harringay ward - an oddity of old administrative divisions.
