Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Green Lanes / Manor House Hill c 1905

The building featured to the left of the photo is Northumberland House.

The pale area of pavement you can see on the right is directly outside River Gate, leading into Finsbury Park. The gate is in the exact same place today, just south of the New River, and the pedestrian entrance into Rowley Way is in the exact spot where the entrance to Northumberland House once stood.

Beyond the mainhouse, further up the hill, you can see a large pair of semi-detached houses that belonged to the hospital. Those houses, along with the terrace of six houses that used to stretch south to The Finsbury were knocked down at the same time as Northumberland House to make way for the Rowley Way Estate. You can see that terrace (third photo) along with a fascinating set of photos of Northumberland House here.

God bless your historic Interests, I always it find it fascinating, how design and setting dictate behaviour in the urban realm.

Was Green Lanes, Manor House Hill widened it seems more hostile to pedestrian crossing now?
