Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Spotted on the lake this bright sunny morning were these four attractive birds. I contacted a friend who knows about this sort of thing and he said they were Eurasian wigeons.

I think you need to sack your bird advisor. These are drake Red-crested Pochard. There's a self-sustaining population in the UK now following escapes from wildfowl collections. I have seen up to 10 in Finsbury Park this spring, but only 1 female. They also often turn up at Woodberry or in Clissold Park. Occasionally they make attempts to breed in the area but I don't know if they have ever been succesfull around here (predation by dogs, terrapins, large gulls)

Thanks for this, Chris. Rest assured, I will give my bird advisor a severe talking to!

Predation by terrapins is a huge problem now, they should be culled en mass, they eat native species such as frogs, newts, slowworms, fish and ducklings. The EU banned the import of terrapins to all member states in 1997. If they continue to breed it will be a could be a disaster for much native wildlife. If you see one, email;- customer.services@canalrivertrust.org.uk
