Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Found this stranded on our lawn. Was wiggling about a bit. Just wondered if it's a cocoon / moth or some sort of wasp lavae?

Not in any of my books.

I thought that too at first!
Looks like a turd
The photos don't do it justice! I know it does look like something the cat left for me but I promise you it was moving and what you can't see clearly is the segmented body and evenly spaced tufts of ginger hair.
It is the weirdest looking thing!

If I had to guess I'd be thinking about a chrysalis of some sort.

I think Hugh is right - lime hawk moth chrysalis.

I think it's a Gypsy Moth pupa:

Spot on!

Brilliant! Yes I think that's it. Thank you.

Are you going to keep it in an airy container (with fresh food and in the shade) and post updates on the progress and metamorphosis of the little one?

I actually put him into a hedge shortly after photographing but wish I had thought of that.

What a crazy looking creature!

I hope you don't mind if I use your thread to ask what this chap might be? I found him on the pavement on my way home the other evening and moved him to a place of safety in a nearby garden.
