Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Yesterday I passed the wall at the back of Homebase, Finsbury park side just before the Thai restaurant on Green Lanes.

This wall has been burned out since I believe a bike was set on fire there over three years ago.

Over this time, absolutely zero steps have been taken to paint over or fix the wall.

I have spoken to managers in Homebase who say that part of the building is not theirs.

I have also spoken to the SNT representative of this part of the road, George, and his team has done nothing either.

Meanwhile, this garish sight has been there for all to see for several years, and now graffiti has been sprayed on top to add insult to injury.

I cannot think of another borough in London where a charred wall could be left like that for years on end, with the council being perfectly fine with it.

Is this eyesore the image we want to project of Harringay, just a few years after the redevelopment, that of a war-torn ghost town?

The graffiti can be reported to the council for removal. That would be a start.

I've submitted a report and asked the Council  to collaborate with /cajole / enforce action on Homebase/Arena.

Good luck with that!

It all depends who the building belongs to. It looks as if it houses an electricity sub-station.

You can't really expect the Council to go around cleaning up private property.

You could contact the Arena management.

That's Haringey Council im afraid. If you’re wondering about the bad image it projects of harringay, have you seen the forest

of satellite dishes over the road? Unfortunately if you complain about this kind of thing you are accused of being right wing and a gentrifier on here!

btw the problem at the back of homebase started with PKK slogans daubed all over it. That’s okay though they’re freedom fighters not terrorists!!

English Heritage are currently looking into protecting the view coming down Green Lanes of that "forest".

I'd hold Homebase / The Arena to account rather than the Council. This is private property. I wonder if Homebase might be nudged?

so did this approach work Hugh?

One thing I haven't heard from Homebase is a dickybird. Unusual not to even get some sort of response.

It could be that local, and higher than local, management have a bigger issue than fire damage to an outbuilding next/integral to their workplace -- http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-5567603/Australi...

If so, adds yet another layer to the 'too difficult' sandwich, alas.

This fire was lit a few years back when a new homeless girl arrived on the scene and plotted her belongings in the this door way. She had only been there a few days when someone obviously took a disliking to her being on their ‘patch’ and all her belongings were sadly set a light.

Thanks, was just scrolling down to say this. Much shittier situation that someone (somehow) setting fire to a bike.
