Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have been to Belmont park with my baby on an almost daily basis and each time I go I see drug users confidently using/smoking drugs in broad daylight. A lot of them seem to “hide” in the picnic area, however I have then seen them come into the childrens area and start using the equipment while children are playing.

I have reported this to the police several times but nothing changes.

I have also noticed the same things in Downhills Park and Lordship Rec.

When will people in Turnpike Lane be protected from the plague of drugs that seems to thrive so well here?

Now it seems that the council/police are happy for children to be exposed to such things.

That sounds absolutely awful - the area as a whole seems to invite a lot of antisocial behaviour and it has gotten much worse since we moved here 2 years ago.

I have also seen Downhills and it's an utterly depressign sight. Recently I took some time off and chose to walk through Finsbury Park during the day, on a weekday, which is when the true extent of how bad things are getting becomes apparent.

Finsbury Park is basically a haven for persistent, ongoing questionable behaviour. People (95% men) idling about, urinating in the hedges by the railway tracks (just note the well trodden footpaths) day-drinking, using drugs. On a normal day you see 10s of individuals who engage in this sort of stuff. Large groups of teens gathering on the benches, causing all sorts of disturbance. I'd never choose to go for a walk there with my family or spend any time in Finsbury Park, and I do wonder why the hell we pay our hard earned council tax and endure the annual festivals if the council can't deal with this. It's not impossible - look at Victoria Park, London Fields, Clissold Park....

It feels incredibly unsafe and intimidating - all in broad daylight. I can't possibly imagine what it might be like at dusk - although having taken a foolish run first time we moved here I know i'd never do it again.

Yeah it’s terrible, you can’t enjoy any outdoor activity in the parks around here wifhout someone doing something illegal, and yet the council fines people immediately for stopping in a loading bay etc. It seems like an upside down world in Haringey.

Again, can I please suggest that as well as posting on this site, people send a copy of their comments to the ward councillors for the wards and adjacent wards concerned.

I have previously contacted various councillors but have been completely ignored.

I honestly feel that change only happens once some momentum gathers on HOL

councillors never care about residents, I contacted two of them last year and they never replied back:-((

Can I ask, in Downhills and Lordship rec, whereabouts you've seen the drug users? I haven't seen them, and I'd like to avoid seeing them.

As it happens, we had our first junkie in our front garden (Langham Rd) last week, which was awesome.

I have seen them sitting on the bench looking onto the football field near Downhills Way.

That is disgraceful, my relative lives on that road too so will have to warn her.

Ok thanks.

Same seems to be the case in Chestnuts Park as well. We moved in about 2 years ago now, and nothing has changed. I keep meaning to contact the council about it, so will do soon. So much rubbish there, lots of rubbish/sleepingbags etc in the trees... where we sometimes randomly just see men walk out of, sometimes completely dressed in clean clothes...so not sure what they're doing in the bushes. Groups of men smoking weed right next to the playground... and not sure they could ever change that small area next to the cafe as a non-smoking area considering how close it is to the play area. I saw something on HoL about doing a clean up of the park, but I have thought about next time I'm in there, if I see the rubbish collectors in their truck, I might go and ask them if they're going to actually clean the park, or just take rubbish from the bins... as the bushes are rife with it!

I have just read this thread. I am forwarding to the Parks Service and the Anti-Social Behaviour Team who work with the police and the ward Councillors for the parks mentioned.  I have also had complaints about drug dealing in Harringay Passage and around Turnpike Lane so will add them to the list.

I will report back to you.

Zena Brabazon
Cllr Harringay Ward

Thanks Zena. I sent off a message for anti-social behaviour as well for the screaming we hear a few doors down from us on St Ann's road. I understand it's a community house, but I fear that the person screaming day in day out isn't really getting the support they need.

Thanks. We just need more cops on foot patrol, I get the argument that it's less efficient in terms of getting officers to incidents, but the visible presence must be a deterrent to anti-social behaviour in the first place. Clearly something's not working.
