Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm in the middle of an idle wonder about chickens and just wondered if anyone had any practical experience of keeping them/living nearby to someone who does?

How noisy are they? Do they disturb neighbours etc?

Currently an entirely hypothetical question. I know a few people who have some and love the experience but they all have larger gardens than we do round here.

Just interested to hear thoughts...

Would love a beehive. They DEFINITELY affect your neighbours though. Especially when they swarm. Maybe people put up with it for regular gifts of honey?

A beehive wouldn’t be troublesome to you me neighbors in he slightest. Bees don’t swarm unless they vacate the beehive on the whole. An extremely rare occurrence.

Chickens are very enjoyable, but foxes will have them in a second if you let them out of the coop and no one is there to keep watch all the time ..

They will also happily and successfully break into coups to get at them.  The same happened to a friends' bunnies and the results were pretty horrific.

I'm very much following this. I would love chickens but also don't want all the neighbourhood foxes hanging round my garden. Also has anyone thought about keeping quails as apparently they need less room and are a bit less messy?

Hi,

i am very much a lover of chickens and would not mind at all having neighbours keeping them if they keep them clean etc. However talking to my dad in Italy last week he mentioned that there is a regulation there specifying how far from dwellings a “hen house” should be located. I would be surprised there is no a similar a regulation in the UK. Worth having a look maybe.

I'm also very interested in this. I'd love to keep chickens, but am aware they'd dig up my garden in no time. And the foxes, of course. Apparently, coops from Omlet are fox safe. But also not cheap. At the moment, I'm thinking, part-time chickens. Ideally shared among three or so parties. But I'm still in the dreaming and vague planning stages. If you're ever interested in a set-up like that, let me know!

Chickenshare! What a great idea...

I think the fox issue is what puts me off the most but lets keep in touch if our dreaming ever becomes more concrete.

Excellent, yes, let's! I'm not going to rush it, and may not do it at all. But if I start thinking I could do this responsibly (next spring?), I'll be in touch!

Any other takers, while we're talking about it?

Me! Although please can we get Silkie chickens if so?! My dream chicken.

Oh wonderful! And sure, why not! I was thinking, perhaps three? For minimum impact on the garden, but still a "flock", sort of?

I am not entirely un-serious about the idea. I'll keep a note on this thread, and perhaps let's revisit in the spring?
