Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I walked past Dave's Newsagents this morning to see the rack of newspapers and magazines (one of the few places on Green Lanes to purchase such stuff) has been replaced by a fridge stocked with the bog standard range of drinks, which you can purchase at 100 different locations.  I despair.....

There's another thread about this. Not sure it has any concrete answers, as there are a few different stories/theories/conflicting reports.

I agree entirely. Daves used to stock some of the Greek-language press and had a certain authenticity that a lot of similar shops lack.

Now we have a garish off-license instead. As stated in another (unrelated) thread this, and other newly launched businesses on Green Lanes which I won't name for fear of online crucifixion bear the hallmarks of temporary, cash cows. Rushed, cursory refurbishment, bog-standard offering that you'd find a few doors down. Clearly a lot of money flowing around looking for productive use, and little imagination as to where it should go... all at the expense of the vibrancy and genuine long term potential of our high street.

I ran into him the other day. He's retired and sold the business, which may or may not remain a newsagent of sorts, before no doubt being transformed into another Turkish restaurant...

How many of you guys ever bought even one of Dave's newspaper titles, even once a week/month/year?  Thought so.

They're doing what you've just done Eddie, read news, gossip, for sale, ads ... online. It's why the retail stats tell us newsagents are one of the declining businesses. Some adapt to other demands. Maqsood News does a good line in fashion/photography/music magazines etc. Who would have thought eh :)

Also Waitrose started giving away free papers with the shopping...

I regularly bought greetings cards, wrapping paper and general stationery items there, and used their Hermes parcel service

Let's be honest, 'Dave' wasn't the friendliest chap was he?

He was always nice to me! And he used to chat with my son...

Fair enough. It must have been me then!

I wish him a happy retirement.
