Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We received the 'label of shame' this week, which suggests we are not putting recyclables in our recycling bin. Without labouring on my background, I've worked for over 10 years in the 'sustainability' sector and have a very good knowledge of what can/can't be recycled (env chemistry, etc). Still we might have made an error....

Anyway, I've checked the bin thoroughly and can't see what's wrong. It's all fine - as it has been for the last 14 years I lived in this borough.

I really don't have the time or inclination to deal with this rubbish (pardon the pun), which is a mistake. We have no room in our bin to recycle more. An email to the council will not be answered quickly, because that's how we roll in Haringey.

What should I do? Stop recycling? Use someone else's bin?

These people really do not make this important stuff easy. Would be great if a councillor could help.

Please advise. Sorry for being a complete cynic.

Thanks for your help.

Phone Veolia via council website, as it is quicker to get your bin cleared.

Different councils take different things in their recycling bins - no national policy, that's why people are becoming cynical about the whole recycling issue.

Thanks Gill!

It’s probably worth reporting it to the Council too. So they can keep a note of problems. See the pink button off to the right and up a bit.

Thanks hugh.

This was my error. Haringey do NOT recycle polystyrene, which answers my original question. I really thought they did (backs up your point @gill)

But brings forth so many other questions!

I read the other that that although most councils take black plastic of the sort used for food trays, it can rarely be recycled because the machines can't cope with the colour when decoding what sort of material it is. So we put ours in the general rubbish now.

It’s incredibly annoying as polystyrene is so common and 100% recyclable. The nearest place I can find that takes it is in Southwark!

Quite frankly the whole way in which the 'recyling' is organised is STOOPID!

We should really be putting ALL packinging, including polystyrene and plastics, etc, in one receptacle to be sorted by the refuse collectors. That is what happens in my mother's town in France. So when I am there I do not have to worry about what is and isn't recyclable. After all, the refuse people know what is best! In many cases here, they just co-mingle anyway and send it all to landfill. Even when we have sorted it out for 'recycling'!

But hey...

We get this all the time - my bin is the first one you get to when you walk down my road from Green Lanes, and lots of people stick stuff in our bins and don't bother checking which is which.  I try and check every morning and move stuff to the right bin, but sometimes we get caught out and get the label of shame.  If that happens on a black bin collection week they won't empty the offending bin on green bin only week (even if you've been through and removed the offending item) and you end up with no bin collection for a fortnight, which given that our bins serve three flats, isn't great.
