ULEZ Boundary Expansion

From October 2021 the ULEZ will expand to the North and South Circular Roads. All cars within the expanded zone will need to meet the ULEZ emissions standards or pay a daily charge of £12.50

Minimum emission standards

  • Petrol: Euro 4
  • Diesel: Euro 6

The ULEZ will be enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age. However:

Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those registered with the DVLA after 2005, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001

Diesel cars that meet the standards are generally those registered with the DVLA after September 2015

All those souped up older diesel mercs/BMWs that love racing up the north part of GL or worse still, between humps on ladder roads ... disappear after Oct 2021

My 2004 car is fine. I can’t foresee it making that much difference if it’s going back, by then, 16 years.

Check the emissions limits. Do you know your car's emissions reading? If it's petrol, maybe. Diesel, definitely not. There are going to be a lot of diesel cars scrapped. And if one ignores the £12.50 per day charge, it's a £160 fine. TfL are serious on reducing emssions. Popping down to Sainsbury's is about to get a £12.50 surcharge.

I think I read somewhere that if you live within the new ULEZ zone you get an extra year to change/scrap, but I could be wrong about this.

Even though this will mean the death of my trusty 1.3l petrol car, which is really pretty clean compared to some of the behemoths that will be untouched by this legislation - I'm absolutely ecstatic that something, finally, is being done. Bravo Sadiq Khan.

Wonder if the Tories will campaign against it in the mayoral election? "Vote Conservative to continue poisoning your children at the current rate."

Doing so will surely lead you to sing the praises of Boris rather than Sadiq. Neither clown deserves applause.

Well, yes, I think it is. It's a political decision. If you never credit politicians for the things they do that are clearly for the common good, then they might not get re-elected, and someone else, eg Johnson, could come and undo their good work. It always frustrates me when people have a go at politics - it's how society is run, like it or not..

And yes, I know Johnson proposed the initial ulez, but extending it to the north circular is a far bolder step. Considering Johnson cancelled the congestion charge extension westward, I don't imagine he would have done what his successor has done.

The CC introduction was about revenue and infrastructure cost, not air quality. Your imaginings and wonderings seem a little misguided. My point was that overlaying facts with flawed biases is a form of politicising which doesn't do much to help or progress the conversation about air quality.

As for the concerns that politicians might not get enough credit, it's what's at the forefront of almost every decision they make. They really don't need encouraging or help with patting themselves on the back. 

And my point, JHauptman, is that Boris Johnson wasn't elected with a mandate to reduce car use, and that air quality is political.

But you carry on with your flawed biases, dodgy politicians stuff. 

I keep my car mostly as a luxury to get out of london to see friends & family and the occasional chore. I think on average I might use it less than once a month. On that basis the expansion of the ULEZ will ensure I scrap the car or give it away to someone outside of the ULEZ.

I've owned this car from new and it was a relatively low-polluting Diesel when it was purchased (126g/km) but times change.


All of that said, I am in total support of more punitive measures, I can taste the pollution in the air these days when I cycle/run to work. It's grim.

You should try DriveNow, Ubeeqo, ZipCar... All will be cheaper than owning your car if you only use it occasionally.
