Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A few interesting developments on the Grand Parade that cave caught my eye - would be worth gathering any more intel that HoL might have on these:

339 Green Lanes - formerly the Hot Nuts outlet, which had a brief spell as an improvised fruit stall appears to be getting fitted out to be a fishmonger or a butcher, judging by the colour scheme and the number of fridge/freezers and display counter currently being installed. Hopefully another addition of an A1 to the high street!

Former Tramp/Izmir premises - looks like their refurbishment is almost complete and judging by their instagram account it's to become a 'cocktail bar.' Won't comment on the outcome of the refurbishment, but I'll say that it has a flat screen TV, playing a continuous loop of an open fire...

60 Grand Parade - formerly a Ranj Telecom. Noted the bifold door frontage, suggestive of a restaurant/coffee/bar, and poked my nose in. Saw some murals which confirm a likely conversion to A3 or 5, and haven't seen a planning application for change of use.

5-6 Grand Parade - former Opera and Afters premises (i believe) - some refurbishment appears to be taking place, and looks like the two premises are being merged. Won't speculate but it's highly likely it's another restaurant. As above no planning history related to the merger so worth keeping an eye on this one.

Hi - yes that's the one. Maybe I am being too harsh on the whole concept - certainly a lot better than much of what's on Green Lanes, yet not as compelling/interesting as some of the standout places in Stokey/Dalston. My main disappointment is that as it's taken the place of a retail unit hasn't really delivered on the mixed use commitment, or anything materially different to some of the established 'poached eggs on toast' places.

For examples done well in the borough, look no further than Venus of Haringey in Florentia Clothing Village who don't fuss too much about the décor but have an ever-changing menu that is interesting and exciting and clearly run by people who know - and love - food...

That being said, I am glad that people who have eaten there appear positive about it and that it's not another kebab place, so it's making an incremental difference.

Been there twice now and enjoyed it both times

Nice. Thanks for the update. I'd like to see some more varied cuisine so hopefully the restaurant isn't another Turkish place, as much as I like a cop sis

Paul of Harringay Local picked up the 5-6 Grand Parade development here. My reply offers my view on the viability of it becoming a double restaurant.

Hmmm

Another eatery when there are so many.

This WILL morph into another turkish restaurant in time....believe you me!

Received a notice today that the application to change to use of 5-6 Grand Parade from retail to restaurant has been refused.  The reasons are below -

1. The proposal would result in the loss of a retail unit, that would have an unacceptable impact on the balance of uses and harm the vitality and viability of the Primary Shopping Frontage and would exacerbate the over-concentration of non-retail use within the locality of the site, contrary to policies 2.15, 4.7 and 4.8 of the London Plan 2016, policy SP10 of the Haringey Local Plan 2017 and policy DM42 of the Haringey Development Management DPD 2017.

It looks like Haringey are finally persisting with sticking to their own policies.

Let’s hope so

That is great. They are sticking to planning policy and whoever was hoping to open another Turkish restaurant owes them a debt of gratitude for this establishment would have gone bust in approximately 36 weeks.

Thought I'd share an update following a brief walk up and down Green Lanes during 'lunch break':

  • Marie Curie is either out or being refurbished, I have seen a reference floorplan on the window that appears to be indicative of a clothing/retain establishment (if indeed Marie Cure is closed for good) which includes a changing room...

  • Former Sira premises - works are underway and it appears as though it's being re-segmented into 2 separate units. It's anybody's guess what's on the cards for its next incarnation.

  • Former Mezzo premises - now converted to a supermarket, which appears to be approaching finalisation. What I could see was a very utilitarian refurb, with a design borrowing heavily from the vanguard of retail interior design during the Turkish economic boom of the 2000s - plastic crates on shelves, mirrors, tacky suspended ceilings and Covid-proof ceramic flooring. Yuck.

  • The former Pentadaktylos club (supposed French Taco start up) appears to have restarted construction.

  • Abraco, who appeared to flaunt their planning application by putting some pretend retail up in the front appear to have installed fridges, in place of their mock-retail concept. They have also applied for an alcohol license. So much for 3/4 Retail.

I spoke to one of the employees from the Marie Curie store last week.  It’s being refurbed and will reopen as Marie Curie.

That’s great!
