Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was in Harringay Green Lanes this morning and thought it would be nice to stop & have a coffee outside one of the many coffee shops there. But at every place I stopped I was greeted by a blue pall of foul-smelling tobacco smoke emanating from the armies of smokers sitting outside every one of them. Thinking it would be better inside, I ventured into one such shop but it being a windy day, it was even more smoky inside.

I thought it was against the law to smoke in or near public places? Pubs these days certainly seem to interpret and comply with the law far better than the Green Lanes establishments. It's s shame really since a lot of would-be customers must be put off by having to sit inhaling someone else's dirty habits - or do these places only cater for this type of clientele? I suspect the latter.

I went home in the end & made myself a coffee there but it's not the same. Shame.

Well I chose not to go to the first coffee shop I visited, Nor the second, nor the third, etc. And in the end I chose not to go to any of them which is a shame really. Surely some coffee shop proprietor somewhere must realise the commercial benefit to them of opening a smoke-free coffee shop for those who don't want to be gassed while drinking their espressos, etc?

A shame for whom?  For yourself perhaps.  Coffee shops are running a business.  A smoke-free option might be a fair compromise, if it worked.  Then those who enjoy a cigarette outside would be able to do so in a 'intolerance-free' environment.

The smoking’s nothing. Wait till you see the spitting!

As a non smoker who hates the smell of smoke I was over the moon when smoking in public places became illegal... I hadn't realised that I wouldn't be able to enjoy a coffee in the sun as a result .. I love the park cafe at Manor House but when I took my grandkids for lunch I was appalled to see the play area next to a smokers area... The staff said they will discuss it with the manager.. So fingers crossed they will reorganise their seating arrangements .... I live in hope..

You obviously don't mind inhaling the noxious fumes from all the traffic on Green Lanes. I find that I am unable to sit inside cafes because of all the unsupervised children running around screaming. We can't always have things our way.

I think I can guess the establishment you're referring to  (Green Lanes, junction with bottom of Beresford Rd?). Pretty much a creche/nursery on weekdays during office hours and I've given up trying to hold business meetings over a coffee here. But once the babies & buggies disappear in the evenings, out come the smokers. WTF...

What I don't think has been pointed out yet is that (although we didn't all immediately realise) the change in the law meant that the pleasure of sitting outside catering establishments in warm weather would be effectively denied to non-smokers. Unintended consequences? In other countries I've seen outside areas divided into smoking and non-smoking, but smoke the the smell does drift across. It doesn't seem to have been grasped by smokers or cafes that non-smokers would like to sit outside but often can't. It would be nice if smokers could perhaps have their fag before coming to the cafe.

can we also go back to banning children from pubs. They don't belong in them.

Because you choose to live in a city ?

Agree but would also have to add dogs. Years ago it was understood that pets could not be taken into catering establishments but now more and more are doing it, similarly assuming everyone loves them, and I gather this is allowed. It's actually encouraged in some places eg a hotel in Wales where they had a dining room especially for dogs and their owners.

Great idea. A few differences between children and cigarettes though.

No one discards them in public after setting them on fire.

Very easy to go home not smelling of secondhand child exhaust. Noxious as it is, you don't have to deal with it if you didn't bring one with you.

Also, you didn't start life as a cigarette yourself...

some should undoubtedly be set on fire and then discarded. With the spawners too.

I go to a pub to relax not to have my nerves shredded by shrill screaming and crying of an over tired sprat.
