How to retrieve data from broken iphone 8?

The phone got trashed during a go-karting event. It can charge and the sim is fine too but the screen and phone is completely bent and broken. Does anyone know how to retrieve data - contacts, photos, etc. - as the teen had never backed up to icloud and there are a lot of photos on it which is of great sentimental value.

One option would be to book a 'genius' appointment at one of the Apple Stores (e.g. Covent Garden or Regents Street) - the appointment itself will be free, but they will charge for any work done afterwards if they propose it.

Be warned that Apple has a tendency to just state the data is unrecoverable and you must purchase a new phone. There are independent repair firms out there that will take on data recovery work if needed.
