Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was looking to make a purchase from Amazon, but before I could make the purchase a page appeared saying Thank you for Joining Amazon Prime. I did not know what that was, so switched off. A few days later I found a debit on my bank statement for £7.99, which I later learned is the monthly fee for joining Amazon Prime. I immediately cancelled, but every avenue for asking for a refund seemed blocked. Unless I receive a refund I will never use Amazon again. I discovered that many other people have been caught out by this.

Yes this is sharp practice. I phoned Amazon and they refunded me.

Thank you for your reply, Philip.

I could not find their number. Would you mind sending it to me, please?

The same happened to me not too long ago. Before I knew it I'd signed up to Prime. I wasn't even sure what I'd clicked on.

You can request a call from customer support here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/contact-us

I used the live chat box on the same page, had it cancelled within a couple of minutes. Still delivered the item the next day which was a turn up for the books.

Thanks for your reply, Neil, I tried what you suggested but they did not call me.

I am hoping that Philip will be able to give me the number he called.

I was caught out by the Prime 'free trial' period which I then didn't cancel. Coincidently just this week I had a spam email purporting to be from Amazon which I reported to them. As part of that investigation they are refunding me £119 and cancelled the Prime subscribtion, without me even asking. It was customer services: cs-reply@amazon.co.uk.

I was so impressed I actually returned to using them this week after a very long absense.

Link to an Amazon page on how to cancel, including the 'free trial', they say:

Yes we missed seeing whatever you need to do, a box to untick(?) when buying a book so we got the free trial, fortunately only that, and escaped. It didn't get to be the giant vampire squid by asking nicely, I guess.

We try to use Foyles instead, or the Muswell Hill bookshop [link] on Fortis Green Rd that's proper independent. And Fopp by Shaftesbury Avenue for DVDs.

Instead of giving money to Amazon, for books, DVDs etc I now always use use Hive.co.uk. Excellent service and they give a percentage of each order as a donation to whichever local bookshop you choose.  You can also have things delivered for free to said local bookshop.  I don't know why Hive is not better known.
