Haringey Left Behind (Again) as Hackney Announce Plans for Segregated Cycle Track for Green Lanes

While Haringey Council faffs around with its almost universally unpopular scheme to divert traffic from Crouch End to Harringay, Hackney Council is getting on with the real work of creating a transport system fit for the future.

Hackney Council has announced that it wants to transform its section of Green Lanes to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians. The proposals include adding a cycle track between Newington Green and Manor House, as well as narrowing roads to reduce traffic speed, "floating bus stops" and raised continuous pavements.

Hackney Transport chief Cllr Jon Burke said: "Green Lanes forms a key route for people travelling in the borough, but at the moment it's a hostile environment dominated by cars. We want to transform it for walking and cycling, so we can encourage more people to travel cheaply and sustainably, improving the quality of London's toxic air and reducing our reliance on polluting vehicles. I'd urge people to have their say on the proposals."

Subject to consultation, the scheme would be delivered in two phases. This consultation relates to the first phase of proposals between Petherton Road and Woodberry Grove.

Consultation on a second stage will take place later this year.

The Council says it is relying on funding bids for the project, so if it doesn't achieve full funding it would have to carry out the work in stages.

That section of Green Lanes is an absolute cycling oasis compared to Wightman Rd. What Hackney COULD do to help Harringay out is allow a right hand turn when heading North on Green Lanes at Manor House. They only do stuff for themsleves though, which is at least better than our council which only does stuff for Crouch End.

So they don't care that their busses are held up in rush hour by traffic on Green Lanes in Harringay that would rather turn right at Manor House than go all the way to the Salisbury? Do they still think Hermitage and the Gardens are open?

It's a good shout John. Could really do with a dedicated right turn phase for the north and south arms which would improve throughput.

Southbound has two lanes that can turn right.

I've provided some views. Not sure how they'll do Manor House - with the Travelodge going up, slightly skewing the alignment of the road on the south approach to the junction to provide more footpath and cycle space on what is a very wide road would be nice.

And hopefully they don't just give up there, providing proper infrastructure past the Finsbury.

Then maybe - just maybe - Haringey will be embarrassed into providing something - ANYTHING - north of the border...

Like a cycle lane that ends at the crossing half way down the hill at the exit from Finsbury Park?

Better than nothing isn't it? Ideally they'd at least extend down to the junction with Endymion, but Haringey will do its usual mental gymnastics to find an excuse not to, I'm sure.

I’ve always wondered if the person who drew up the plan for that one ran out of ink.

This is pitting cyclists against pedestrians. More speed cameras, narrower lanes, bigger footpaths (if you're a kid there'll be room for you to cycle sensibly on the footpath). Enforced 20mph would be great for cycling. The difference between cycling in London outside the A406 and inside is tremendous.

It looks quite good, especially removing the parking outside the Brownswood shops - that is the most dangerous bit.

Shame we can't get nice things in Haringey, Hackney consistently outperforms them

For that section, I just take the lane, pedal as fast as I can and don't let anyone overtake me unless they have room in the other lane. I think the most important thing for cyclists would be enforcement of the 20mph limits, which the police refuse to do.

I wonder if the person from Hackney could perhaps have a chat with their opposite number in Haringey to plan a scheme that doesn’t end at the borough boundary?
