Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

For a few blissful weeks there seemed to be almost no traffic around, even on Green Lanes. But since Easter, it seems to me that every day has seen more and more traffic on Wightman, Endymion, Seven Sisters and the Ladder streets. True there's no morning and evening rush hours, with everyone working at home, but in the middle of the day when I've gone out for a walk it feels little different from normal.

Where is everyone going? Not all the cars can be carrying essential workers or deliveries - certainly not the BMWs and Mercs with the usual two guys, but also families, couples. Out for a spin because they are bored? Going shopping somewhere far afield - when we really have all that we need on our doorstep?

Maybe they're all off for a quick panic buy? They might have polished off their toilet paper and pasta supplies

Same on the underground, definitely more passengers.

Before Easter just a handful of people in each carriage on Piccadilly Line from Turnpike Lane around 8/8.15am travelling West, same around 5.30pm in opposite direction. Now just about every seat is occupied in the morning and more so in the evening where it’s standing room only. Some of the extra passengers look like they work in the construction industry.

I came back from my walk yesterday afternoon via Green Lanes (which I’ve been avoiding for a few days) and the traffic was a lot busier than a few days ago

I concur. On the food-run walk to Crouch End yesterday, we certainly noticed more traffic and three or four take-aways that haven't been open for a few weeks had opened up again. People certainly seem to be relaxing. Whilst that's understandable, we have to hope that it doesn't go too far too soon.

Definitely concur traffic is building up in Harringay. My experience of Westminster, however, is still one of surreality. Very little traffic and even fewer pedestrians.

Much less reason to be in town, I suppose.

Apparently we are now allowed to drive to get exercise, which must be increasing the flow. Despite the fact that parks and the Heath etc keep asking us not to.

.You can drive to exercise provided the exercise is longer than the drive..see metropolitan police guide..

It's definitely built up in the last week - not just in Harringay. I was going through Camden in a car this last week and was surprised to see so many people and cars around. It did not look like a lock-down at all. I know everyone is finding this really tough but if they start to flout the rules the cases are just going to keep rocketing up and we'll be in lockdown for even longer

If there's a new wave of sloppiness, it will show up in 7-10 days' time. And a week later in hospital figures.

I'm told that West Green Road 7Sisters end looks like any other day, clumps of people hanging around. Maybe they are all special immune people.  Could police move away from the parks and into our 'town centres'?

A lot are Deliveroo drivers waiting to collect takeaways. No social distancing - puts me right off ordering!

I've been making the same point to the police for a few weeks now & it did have an effect where we live (top end of Wood Green High Rd near the border with Enfield borough). We can after all avoid parks if we want, but we do have to shop (or walk out your front door in our case) and no one, especially the elderly & vulnerable should have to walk through the middle of a gang of hacking, spagging, ignorant, arrogant morons (or into the road to avoid them) to do that. I made a comment to that effect on the Haringey Police Facebook page, but much more politely (though it disappeared, so not sure if it got picked up or not), but you can also find out who your local bobbies are for your wards and contact them, which I also did.

I would also argue, that though in the UK as a whole we got the lockdown aspect of the Covid-19 response about right (not too strict like France & Italy, but enough to have the required effect), it does need stricter enforcement in some places. Absolutely right for the police to tell people to move along & go home if they are loitering in groups, etc. but if they see them again later the same day or the next doing exactly the same thing, then fine they should just fine them surely?  Simple and fair, but that doesn't happen, they just keep asking in most cases and as long as people disperse at the moment, they are largely free to repeat the same behaviour the next day and so on & so forth. By all means police by consent, but it only works if there is proper consent. The clue's in the name after all.

This link to report breaches of the lockdown has already been shared on here, but just in case some of you haven't seen it: https://www.met.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/c19/tell-us-about-possi...

I'd suggest that a lot are driving around to relieve boredom, knowing that the roads are empty, and often at speed. The same clowns with bang and splatter exhausts are driving up and down the High Road all day.
