Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Fortnightly bin collections are to be extended across the country to save money, according to guidance from the Audit Commission uncovered by the Conservatives. A DEFRA spokesman said councils should work with local communities to determine the most appropriate waste collections.

I must say that I do support fortnightly refuse collection with weekly recycling collections and would go further and make recycling compulsory. As long as the each borough is actually recycling and not shoving it in landfill as we have often seen purely to meet European targets. Why not put a lock on our wheely bins so that people are responsible for what goes in it. I would imagine it would be a great revenue source for the council around here : )
One drawback is that I live in a block of 16 flats. We will have to have 16 black wheelies, 16 green recycling boxes and 16 food waste containers. Oh and 48 padlocks :-) And how do the bin men empty the padlocked wheelies ?

It's always the same when people suggest things like compulsory water meters. Each flat would have to have two meters, one for direct mains water and one for water from the communal tank -32 in all.

However, the justification for fortnightly collections is said to be the saving to councils of not having to pay for landfill charges and there will be a saving if you halve the number of collections. I, and the flying pig that just went past my window, look forward to these savings being passed back to the council tax payers :-)
There are ways John, maybe smaller bins, one large bin with different sections, who knows? Where there is a will there is a way.
I may be imagining this but I'm sure I was told in one of my many litter and bins meetings that Haringey had no plans to switch to fortnightly collections. Given the still (quite) low levels of recycling and the issues around timed collections on the main roads, I think we would be a long way from this in Haringey.

I personally could live with fortnightly but looking at some people bins even a couple of days after collection, there would have to be some massive education programme and possibly a stick in the forms of fines to get it working. This would of course cost money to implement, maybe more than just leaving it at weekly
I'd have no problem with a fortnightly collection, though there are times when I think the recycle box could be bigger. Some houses near me could do with 3-4 full size bins per week or I dread to think of the state if left for two weeks.
I agree. My green box is always overflowing by Thursday (collection day) and this is after I visit the Hornsey Recycling plant at the weekends. As for fortnightly collection for the wheelie bins - great! I changed my bin for a smaller one over a year ago and it never even gets half full before collection. In L.A and Dublin they have wheelies for recycling and it works well.
A suggestion. Reverse the roles. From now on, only recycling to go in our wheelie bins, and only other stuff in the "recycling" boxes. Space problem solved!

By the way, the councils really do need to crack on with weighing our rubbish, or something. I'm usually with the Daily Mail on this sort of issue but the amount of stuff being thrown away and stuck in the ground is literally a disgrace. How many people in Haringey do you think actually do ANY recycling? Less than 10 %, I reckon.
