Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

After months of work getting the premises at 5 Wightman Road ready, Kevin Vanthem and his team this morning opened Cafe Moka for a trial run.

I popped in to say hi and see how things were going. I was impressed. Kevin and his team have done a great job with the place. I love the eclectic retro look and feel. People seemed to be coming in and naturally drifting towards the kitchen to say hi and then easily falling in to conversation with one another. It feels like Moka has the potential to become a truly local hub (and we're promised top-notch wifi soon too).

Whilst I was there, I was lucky enough to meet HoLers James and Lindsay (pictured below, in the garden) and Osbawn. I also met Sam (yet to discover HoL) whose family has lived on Wightman for the past 40 years, between globe-trotting.

Below is a preview. Do pop along say hi to Kevin, his partner, his mum and the team and try a coffee. They were hard at work making a tart when I left. So I guess that should be ready about now. Mmmm......

(By the way, I learned today that as well as being the name borne by an illustrious Soho forbear and a style of coffee, Moka is also a place in Mauritiusclose to where Kevin's family is from).

We went in yesterday for brunch and the place does indeed look lovely.

Very laidback and very friendly, welcoming staff, even if they did they seem a tad nervous.

My main gripe would be the fact that the menu is VERY limited at present.

Basically it's flan and salad . . . or salad!

Now, as nice as my salad was, a man needs something more substantial on a Saturday morning sometimes!

Or at least something HOT!

We did chat with them and ask if they'd be expanding their range and they seemed unsure, saying they were planning to be seasonal and were aiming for their own identity.

My hunch is that they could do far worse than see how places like The Front Room down in Stroud Green.

Every time we've been in there, there are couples with the bloke going for the posh full English and their partners sticking to salads. Choice is a great thing in such circumstances.

Do hope they think about expanding provision anyway, as I'd love to see them do well.

Thanks for this – what a great place! It’s been ‘pending’ for some time. So nice that they have finally opened their doors. Judging by the reaction – loads of locals turned up - and the emptied shelves, this weekend has been a great success, and augers well for the long term. There's genuine vision there and a really nice atmosphere. And the best walnut-chocolate brownies this side of Connecticut!

Do they do Mauritian food too ? That would be brilliant. I can pop in to G&N garage to get the car fixed then relax over a roti. Or a vindai sandwich. Yum.

By the way - is there wifi?

This weekend was a trial opening. They're expecting BT to have installed wifi by the time they open fully this coming weekend. I've made the point to Kevin that good wifi is good business for him. I'm pretty sure he gets that.

Looks good, can't wait to check it out.

Will you be updating your profile picture now Hugh to one of you quaffing mocha in Moka?

;o)

I live on this side of the ladder and was really intrigued on what the place would be, so happy its a cafe!

Couple of Q's though, what are the prices like? Any chance Kevin could get us a menu to put up on here?

Second, will it take cards? I am one of those useless people who rarely carries cash and would love to haul up in here for the afternoon and pay by plastic.

- I'm sure Kevin would be happy to put a menu up when it's ready. This past weekend was a trial opening prior to the full opening this coming weekend.

- Not sure about cards at this point.

Looks great! Can't wait to go! :-)
Went along this morning with some fellow babes-with-babes - really like what you've done with the place and hope to be a regular! : )
