Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello,

does any body know of any good primary schools in the area? Our daughter is starting in September and its proving daunting and stressful as still unsure and the deadline is Jan 15th!. I have checked schools in the Borough and all OFSTED reports but was just hoping for any advice.

Also any cheaper independent schools may be worth a look.

We are on the ladder.

Thanks so much fr any information.

Cheers.

My son is in his final year at St. Marys CE Infants - they just achieved an outstanding in their Ofsted report but there are limited places for non-worshiping families.  Having said that, we live on the ladder and are not Christian and had no problem in getting a place.  The school's also just a couple of minutes from Hornsey Train Station so good for transport links.

My daughter is at South Harringay and she has settled really well and I like the school. The staff are very dedicated. A new Head started last year and has lots of plans for the school. I know parents whose children are at North Harringay and Chestnuts and all of them seem very happy with their respective schools.

Personally what I wanted was a place at our nearest school so that as she gets older she can walk to school herself as I think this is a pretty important factor in children building their independence especially as they get towards secondary school age.

We moved house last year and our kids moved to North Harringay in September.  I have been really impressed with they way they helped us make the transition to the new school as smooth as possible.  Both kids are really settled and happy have excellent teachers and made some lovely friends.  I'm very impressed with the Head who is very focused and proactive and with the teaching staff in general.  There is also a great after school/holiday club and a range of extra curricular activities.

As others have said you need to go on visits to see what is best for you and your child and try not to get bogged down with ofsteds and other peoples views!

I can only echo what has been said about NHP. Our kids (Yr3 and reception) love it there and have made many great friends (teachers too!). The After School Club, Breakfast Club and Holiday Club are really useful for working parents and there are countless after school activities, my eldest goes to Soccer Kids and loves it. The roof garden is also an absolute gem. The food also offered is great and runs a fortnightly menu offering a very healthy menu and a variety of diets. We're veggie and they are always well catered for and as parent you can even sample lunch time with the kids, at your peril!

The PSA are very active and encourage parents to get involved in many things; cake sales, discos, summer and Christmas fairs and other fund raising activities. There also annual cultural evenings organised by the school which helps build up communication between cultures and is always a huge success.

As Adam has said they have a great walk to school programme and provide safe cycling training scheme and NHP is fortunate to be right next to Fairland Park, always handy after school. Parents have also been known to organise camping weekends, obviously for the children ; )

SHP and Chesnuts also have good reputations but obviously I don't know about them as much as NHP, which of course is smack bang in the middle of the community and only a short walk away from most places in Harringay.

Hey,

NH is our nearest for sure but will try our wish list first. Thanks for all your input people, its nice to have a supportive community. Hopefully our next concern will be Eaton or Cambridge!

You can do both. In fact unless you get into Eaton or something similar, it's unlikely you'll get to Cambridge. The entrance exam for Eaton (the 13+) includes latin... not taught in state schools.

On the topic of supporting local schools, Downhills is being forced into becoming an academy - http://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/forced-primary-academie... - a friend just noticed that some of the Downhills staff or parents are outside Tesco today asking people to sign their petition (against the forced privatisation) and there's a meeting at the school on Monday.

Thought I'd add it here in case it's been missed and if anyone wants to support Downhils.

If your nearest school is NHP and you believe in the importance of a strong community then I would definitely recommend you take a tour of the school before you make your ultimate choices. The community strength really comes in to its own when your child attends the local school. Good luck.

If you stand in the passage between Hewitt and Alison roads in the morning from 8:30 to 8:40 you will see parents from north of there taking their kids to SH and parents from south of there taking their kids to NH. That if anything tells you how little there is between them, despite what the Ofsted reports may say,
