Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Alexandra Palace might be in line to get its own aerial assault course following a proposal from Go Ape, an outdoor adventure company.

The installation for both adults and children would be in the north-western corner of the park.

The plan was presented to the Alexandra Palace stakeholder meeting last week. S formal planning application has yet to be lodged.

Interesting. Very popular from what I've heard. Nearest currently is at Trent Park. Would be the only one in a more central London location. Can't see many objections to this as long as they're looking after the trees :)

Agree. Be nice to have a fun activity there . The pitch and putt must surely be the most ridiculous in the world!

My first reaction was "great!" But then I thought about the trees and the wildlife; then I read (above) that it would be in the north-western corner of the park.

This is, surely, incorrect?

The north-western corner of the Park is the Grove which is an area of mixed decidous and coniferous woodland including a sheltered coppice, open grassland and an enormous gnarled oak tree.

That is fact; my opinion - and I am surely not alone - is that it is the most beautiful location for many miles.

It is also a prime spot for birdwatching and has a fine reputation for migrants according to the London Bird Club website.

Do you have any more information about the proposed location?

How does it work? Would 'Go Ape' buy the land, rent the land? These companies are massive, they charge a lot of money for the session. Profit over people, again.

A year or so ago someone living near Trent Park told me about residents not being happy with the Go Ape set up there.  So just had a quick look for stuff online about this and found this out of date facebook page.

It sets out some of the concerns:

Trees were cut down to make way for zip wires - there were allegations that some of these, including ancient oaks were cut down in breach of the law.

What was a tranquil area to walk in became very noisy and effectively out of bounds due to hazard warning signs telling people to keep clear.

Increase in traffic as a result of visitors.

A cafe which had been run by a local couple for about 30 years was ou....

Go Ape paying a relatively small rent to the Council but making huge profits in what was a public park.

So while maybe it sounds like a fun thing to have in a local park, it may be that the drawbacks are greater.  At £32 quid a go I can't see many people going more than once or twice, whereas a walk in woodland can be enjoyed for free as often as you want.

The Grove is really not a huge area either - I can't quite understand how it would work there. And it is rather nice as it is.

I've only been to Go Ape once - in Aberfoyle in Scotland - and not sure Alexandra Park could quite compare with this zip wire.....

If some of the profits funded a bird protection fund maybe there coyld be a net wildlife gain ?

They should put it where the golf course is. Go to any car boot sale and you can see how popular golf is these days.

They must be able to make structures you can jump off artificially . You could then add platforms above to make even more nesting space for birds.

Or keep the greens and make the first Go Ape golf course and introduce 'sky putting'. :)

It is intended to be in the NE section - down from the lake where the donkeys used to be.  Friends of Alexandra Park are asking for comments.  It will have zip wires (and therefore much shrieking)  for many hours of the day. A great shame if it is approved - a lovely quiet part of the park more or less out of bounds - not to mention more cars etc - can't see how local houses won't be affected. Plans can be seen here:
