Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've just been down at Tramp, helping owner Haldun, manager Andre and Chef Tushar with a wine tashting (hic). I'm not sure how much help I was with that, but was glad to get an update on progress as I haven't seen Haldun since the photoshoot a few weeks back.

They shared the first draft menu. Let's not put too fine a point on it - it looks amazing. With Haldun's permission, I'm sharing below a sample of the starters/sharing plates. I can't wait!

  • Persian spiced Green pea and spinach cubes with garlic yoghurt
  • Tomato EVO oil and basil on turmeric and fenugreek leaves bread
  • Padron peppers
  • Earth, Truffle and baby green soup
  • Marinated cauliflower kimchi yoghurt and black sesame
  • Selected wild mushroom croquettes with chorizo and kumquat mayo
  • Radish carpaccio clementine, Himalayan salt, wasabi and selected herbs
  • Octopus, curry leaves, chilli coconut milk, ginger and wakame

Does that look promising or what!

I don't need meat for any course in particular. It was an observation on the overall approach of the menu (starters and shared plates) shown at this point. I am making a generalization here, but if you were to look at starters/small plates at other not-vegetarian restaurants, >50% would contain meat or seafood. Therefore, I think this is of note.

But it wasn't an observation, it was a criticism.

I think it's a good idea to offer a wide variety of veg starters (though I'm looking forward to trying the octopus too!). It's more inclusive.

Generally there aren't enough veg options, ask any vegetarian and they'll tell you the vegetarian pizza is always the first thing to go at parties...

Let's not criticise one another, please. Let's just celebrate this new restaurant and all enjoy it in our own ways!

The following statement is in no way a criticism.

'I was about ask if it was vegetarian, then noticed chorizo as the sole meat ingredient.'

No Jon. It's not. You haven't criticised anyone. Your comment on the menu was a fair personal comment.

It was this comment I was referring to: "but the balance looks a little off right now".

For clarity, I'm not accusing you of criticising anyone.

Fair enough. I would correct it to say

'of note is that the balance of dishes between meat vs. fish. vegetarian leans more towards vegetarian than is typical of a not-vegetarian restaurant'.

Whether that difference to what is typical is good or bad is an individual's opinion.

Yeah sorry I can't resist. You only need to go into one of the many Turkish restaurants we have around here to eat as much meat as you want. I for one want something different and I welcome more vegetarian options!!!

There's octopus too and a baby in the green soup!

Really hungry now - is anyone else having an early lunch after reading this?

Butternut (from Harringay Foods) soup with spelt sourdough from Harringay Local Store here.

So is Tramp going to be a restaurant or a bar or a bit of both?
I walked past a few days ago and stuck my head in as the door was open. The guys are really friendly and happy to give you a look around and let you know what's what. I didn't ask but there is a bar where it looks like you can pull up a stool for a bevvy so it felt more like neighbourhood restaurants you often see in France.
