Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Is it just me or are the dodgy groups hanging around the station getting worse?

I received some police marketing a while ago stating the issue was being "tackeled", and yet there are groups of guys out there blatantly dealing/taking drugs in broad daylight, with seemingly no fear that they may be arrested.

What can we do to make sure that the decent people of Turnpike Lane are not ignored?

There's a lot of aggression toward young people on this site. We were all young once i remember being bored during school hols and hanging out with my mates.

Not a mention of "young people" here and certainly no aggression.

Quite, James. You are making assumptions not even alluded to by the author. Your critique of the content on the site as a whole is, I'm afraid, no less poorly sighted.

Ouch!

But, when you were hanging out, did you try to relieve the boredom by selling illegal drugs ?

That, if you hadn't noticed, is the point of this thread.

Well "unsubtle dealing" is putting it mildly Neil. Recently I saw a gentleman completely engrossed in counting his little self seal polythene bags outside the bookies, seemingly oblivious to the rest of us passing by. And later, at the same spot, several other gentlemen counting large bundles of cash in broad daylight, again seemingly oblivious. They seem to have very little fear of the Old Bill.

These folk can appear quite intimidating when they're collected together of an evening although I never seen them threaten or assault anyone. And James, many of them are young, although all (I've seen) are male.

The thing is they are there to make money. They don't tend to be aggressive as they don't want to put off potential customers.  I had drug dealers outside my flat for ages (until they got picked up), very pleasant and helpful young men! Though they dropped a lot of litter.

Well, considering that police on Green Lanes is never seen but only heard (sirens), that is not surprising.

Whether it is begging, drug dealing, drug taking (often is those otherwise useless BT phone boxes), the stretch of green lanes that goes from Manor House to Turnpike Lanes is pretty much a haven for petty criminals.

And I'm not even mentioning the number of rough sleepers that seems to increase there by the week to the council's complete indifference...
People who don't respect those around them enough to find a real toilet and instead use the trees in Ducketts Common in broad daylight in full view of families are part of the problem around here. Unacceptable. Just had to add that to the discussion lol!
Exactly! I couldn't agree more. Some people are so confident of the lack of consquences they flagrantly break the law.

The council and the police are failing the area. People dump rubbish everywhere, speed down the roads and deal drugs without a care.

I feel there needs to be more police presence to stop the drugs, and the council needs to fine people that dump rubbish etc rather than just plonking a sign up. Plus, they need to put some speed cams up.

The question is, how do we as citizens take back our streets. How do we force the authorities to get invovled and do something.

They would never allow this in Highgate, Musewell Hill, and Crouch End. Maybe because they have constant pressure from the residents? I don't know..
One just has to see the difference between Green Lanes and Crouch End: you won't see a beggar there, nevermind a rough sleeper!

The council's complete disregard for our area is frankly shocking, and has gone for long enough now. I am personally canvassing my councillors and council representatives, and the more people do that, the better.

Part of the problem is that essential services are being cut to the core, while at management level they're paying themselves obscene and unjustifiable salaries, not to mention the multi-million pounds new HQ they've recently signed off.

So it is pretty obvious that homelessness and rubbish issues are very far down the council's priorities' list...

Yes I have noticed this more around Harringay. It's disgusting! Yesterday I was in Finsbury Park and a man was urinating against a wall not caring who was looking. The council really don't seem to care  about any of these problems. You're right Sofia this would never be allowed to happen in Highgate, Muswell Hill, Crouch End. Perhaps its because their residents are wealthier!
