Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I know I'm beginning to think about this about a year ahead of when I need to but I'm beginning to ponder the options for secondary school for No. 1 son.....

We had a wretched time with the primary school admission process (had to wait 2.5 years for a school place within walking distance) so any recommendations around the quality of schools and the admissions process for secondary schools would be very useful.

We live on Umfreville Road so I am anticipating that we would end up being offered a place at Park View although Gladesmore would be easier to access by overground.  Has anyone on the ladder managed to get a place there?  Or does anyone have anything good or bad to say about Park View?  Hornsey School for Girls is out (he won't go to school in a dress no matter how much I bribe him) and as a non-believer, I am not keen on religious schools.

Any information gratefully accepted.......

I'm not Antoinette, but I know that admissions are based on distance from the school unless you have any special circumstances or needs. Annoyingly the catchments change every year depending on sibling numbers and the total number of children in that year group. For children starting infants in Sept 2016 the catchment for South Harringay was 0.2609 miles according to this admissions booklet http://www.haringey.gov.uk/sites/haringeygovuk/files/primary-school...

There is a distance checker here: http://schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk/schoolsfinder/ Haringey say this will give you an approximate indication of distances.

You could ask the school for the catchment this year (for children starting in Sept '17), it tends to get a little bit smaller with each year, but could increase a bit if the number of siblings is lower than usual.

The in-year admissions works on the same principle but in practice is slightly different - ie. any places that become available are allocated to the person closest on the waiting list but might also be allocated to the child in greatest need.  So for example if a child has no place at all, they will be prioritised over a child who already has a place somewhere else in the borough even if they live closer.

We are at Heartlands and very happy there but also liked Park View when we looked. Most people are happy with their schools so I wish I hadn't worried so much before.

When we moved to Duckett road 5 years ago in March (so after the January deadline) i put my son on the waiting list for South Haringay as we are the next street over. A place never become available , and I was told that in this borough, people tend not to move. He finally got accepted to a lovely school in Crouch end. Quite a walk, but wonderful school.

To Knavel. As you are considering a Catholic secondary, have a look at St Peters in Elm Grove (Crouch End) up to year 2 and the sister school St Gildas (Yr 3-6) nearby. Lots of children walk over from the ladder via Haringey Station or if you are at top end then 41 bus to Crouch End. They are great schools but there is a lot of movement so places do come up regularly

Thanks for the tip. My wife was the one dealing with school research so she may have looked but I will bring these to her attention to be sure. I am not in love with the idea of them having to cross Wightman Road day in day out. My eldest daughter is already accepted for the first year at St Thomas More it's just the younger two where there is uncertainty.

I am indifferent about the religious theme--I don't even rate S Harringay other than the fact that it's behind my house.  Any school teaches that 2+2=4. Schools only really start to matter at secondary level.

The private school they were accepted in is at the top of Essex Road, St Paul Steiner. It isn't close but the 341 is door to door and the 141 works too with a little walking at the end.  I could easily put them in that private school and then when the local ones open up take them out but uprooting schoolchildren strikes me as not a good idea, hence my feeling like I am in for 50K till all of them are over at More, Woodhouse and such.

Well count yourself lucky you can buy yourself out of the problem. Most of us don't have that option.
