Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My mother, Diana Smith of Hazelville Road, skated Roller Speedway at Harringay Arena after serving with the RAF 303 Squadron. I have precious little information about that time of her life but want to capture what memories I can before they are gone. I am a recently retired journalism professor who will be in North London for two weeks in late July. I appreciate any leads that might direct my research.

Hi Clyde, I assume that you've looked at all the site's content on roller speedway?

Yes, that's what brought me to the site. I didn't find my mother in the five images? But I suspect there are more out there. I would love to talk to you about it. I think Roller Speedway was my mother's way to cope with PTSD.

I could talk to you Clyde, but I know no more than is on the site, I'm afraid.

303? They have one of the top records for kills in WWII and they were a Polish squadron - so respect sir for your mum's part in that. I did my speed skating up at Ally Pally on a wooden rink? We had to have wooden rollers so i would skate up there on my Jackos and change to speed skates. But skating back down from the pally was the best bit!

My mother said she was recruited for Speed Skating after someone from the league watched her barrel jump at the arena.

Hi Clyde

my brother in law and sister were part of Alexandra Palace Speed Skating Club in the early 1960's,

I am estranged from my sister but that might be a good lead.

Best wishes

Eileen
