Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Forty people came to the environment hustings jointly organised last thursday by Friends of the Earth groups in Haringey, Highgate Climate Action Network, Muswell Hill Sustainability Group, and Sustainable Haringey. We invited one person from each party standing across the borough (sadly the Conservatives didn't send a rep): Chair: Fran Acheson, BBC journalist, Green Party: Jarelle Francis, Labour: Councillor Peray Ahmet; Liberal Democrats: Councillor Bob Hare.

Residents showed strong support for council tackling climate change emissions, and protecting the local environment.

All three party representatives stressed need to step up work to cut carbon emissions and air pollution, and to be bolder in promoting cycling and walking, reallocating road space from private cars.

Labour representative Peray Ahmet committed to changing the structure of the council to embed carbon emissions in all it does, especially in Planning; to be tougher about imposing the Zero Carbon Levy; and to boosting the affordable energy strategy to tackle the 30% of Haringey households living in fuel poverty.

Glad Bob Hare, (our long standing Councilor & Green Campaigner for the Lib Dem’s,) (and St Ann’s Green candidate,) Jarelle Francis were able to put Green issues centre stage. We are the Carbonista’s.

If you aren’t already aware, here’s a link for https://greenlibdems.org.uk the largest and fastest growing group in the Lib Dem’s.

Green Lib Dem’s aim to establish and develop links with the wider green movement. As a Green activist I have committed four years to the Green Movement, and I will commit another four years in Harringay moving forward.

Thanks for the report Quentin.

The Labour representative Cllr Peray Ahmet presided over the recent Green Lanes Transport Study i.e. she had an opportunity to reduce air pollution but actually decided to do precisely nothing to reduce traffic in Harringay!

These opportunities need to be taken when we have a chance make decisions, to improve the lives of all our residents for the better.
