Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Walking back today from dropping the boy off at his new school, it was pointed out to me by someone who lives on Woodlands Park Road that the padlock that secures the emergency access only gate across the road has been broken. Larger trucks (including a car transporter!) are now opening the gate to rat run their way down to West Green Road. Some close the gate, some don't.

This is a quiet back road with a busy Children's Centre, a Primary School and is a quiet route for countless school children to walk to and from school.  However, the less civic-minded of the truck driving community are now passing the information on that you can get through and the number of lorries using it is increasing. Responses to requests not to come down the road  and open the gate by neighbouring residents are met with the inevitable "F*** Offs"  so beloved of road users in London.

I have reported it via the Haringey Council App and have tweeted a photo to the council. Can I ask that others who live or use the road regularly do the same so that this problem is quickly sorted and the rat-running is quickly nipped in the bud.

If you are a resident of St Ann's Ward, you could also drop a line to your three councillors: Julie Davies, Noah Tucker and Mike Hakata

Maybe using some cheap plastic cable ties to secure the padlock in place would be sufficient until the problem is sorted more permanently.....?

Because the barrier has to be open to emergency vehicles, I’m not sure I would advise anyone to do that. Council just needs to pull out their finger and fix it pronto. A few reports might bump the job to the top of the pile.

A cable tie is easily cut in an emergency!

Now has a reference number

Here’s one of those drivers who mysteriously knows that this way is ”open”

Deeply unsatisfactory reply to my report from Highways who seem to be ok with lorries using this back way. I’ve replied but I suspect a councillor may need to pursue this as I’m not a resident of St Ann’s although my child uses this route daily to walk to school so I am concerned that they aren’t planning to fix it. It’s just replacing a fire lock!

That is very unsatisfying. I am in the St Ann's ward and will report and drop a line to our councillors.

Do let us know how you get on, very new councillors in St Ann's...

This is barmy. All it takes is an officer to go there with a new FB Padlock (the emergency services carry FB keys that fit them), remove the old one and put the new one on.  5 minute job tops.  Bet it cost more in officer time to compose the email to you.

I would have thought the investigating officer could have worked that out, Tris! Surely, if it was just unlocked, they’d have locked it and sent me a mail saying problem solved.

Think you’re right Tris

Really? So this line

“This issue has been investigated, risk assessed and recorded in line with our highways maintenance plan as not requiring immediate action at this time.“

is council speak for someone may have read your email and decided we ain’t gonna fix it right now, nor later, nor probably ever.

Oookay.

You do realise this is why councils look bad in ordinary people’s eyes, don’t you?

I’ve replied to the email with a “erm...what?” style response.

I wonder if they will reply.

Looks like it's just unlocked from the photo. Keys are available online. Nowt you or the council can do.
