North Middlesex Hospital hit by influx of 40,000 extra patients after neighbouring A&E closes

"Hospital managers were unprepared for an influx of almost 40,000 more patients after a neighbouring accident and emergency department was axed, a report reveals today.

"Nurses at North Middlesex hospital, in Edmonton, told inspectors that their workload “increased significantly” after the closure of Chase Farm’s casualty unit last December because of a shortage of recruits."

I had to go to the Homerton A&E recently (dropped a catch at cricket but the ball lifted my nail off) and wait... I sat next to a very large English couple, she sent him off for tea and he came back with three cans of red bull. They both complained about the nurse she had to see "I bet she was black, wasn't she?" and also said that they'd bet the system worked better in New Zealand or Australia (where they have cash registers in the surgeries and hospitals). On the other side of me was a man in his last 30s in a wheelchair being pushed by a young hipster. I think he had learning difficulties. He was there for paracetamol and there was a big long conversation about when he last had one and so the nurse issued him with ONE tablet and told him to come back when he needed another.

If they're issuing paracetamol one tablet at a time no wonder it's the most common reason to go to A&E.

In this article it makes clear that all these changes were signalled years in advance.  Just because Chase Farm Hospital closes its A&E doesn't mean less people need that servise and a maternioty unit doesn't just arrive and 450 staff aren't employed "just like that".

If there is a cock up blame thiose who are responsible for implementing these changes not the govewrnment or NHS - it's people who just fail to do their job properly.

"A total of 189,000 patients are expected to use its A&E this year, up from 150,000 last year."  I guess they would cover the usual variables of all A&E patients, from those needing an aspirin to those with an ice-pick in their heads.

You mean, like National Insurance? Good grief.

What would really be good is the sharing of my medical records so that I can go and see a quack near to where I work. Actually I can do that but it costs £70 and they don't have access to my records.
