Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There's a film on the BBC website on language diversity based around the Victoria line. It shows a film of the line's route and the languages spoken in those areas, so is of some local interest.

Turkish is one of the most popular languages along the stretch of the Victoria Line from Finsbury Park to Tottenham Hale, but as Ali Gul points out this is also one of the most linguistically diverse parts of the city. "There are over 200 languages spoken on this street," he says of Green Lanes, a vibrant high street that intersects the Victoria Line.

.....but the Beeb have done their research it seems:

While the street (Green Lanes) is well known for its fine Turkish restaurants, residents of Enfield Town, about six miles further north are much more likely to regard Turkish as their main language.

The BBC map below show the density of Turkish speakers. I've added an arrow to show the location of Harringay.

It would have been interesting to be able to compare the speakers of Turkish with the Greek speakers. Unfortunately, the BBC didn't include Greek. I suspect the Greek map would look similar, although slightly more spread out.

....and this map is fascinating. Look at the difference north and south of the river!

Not surprising really, that Havering, Bexley and Bromley and South of the Borough of Croydon have fewer foreigners. That's what makes them attractive for some, but a no-no for me.

Strange that Richmond Park appears to have bi-lingual trees. Must be non-native ones..

Haringey is interesting too - look at the east-west divide. You can track the the railway by language diversity.

The railway is a huge barrier. It's really tricky to cross, especially in a motor vehicle (hence our traffic issues close to it) and nobody seems to realise what this means. Hopefully this map illustrates it well.
