Event Description

Murray Craig's talk is about admitting people to the Freedom of the City of London, an ancient custom that dates back to the early thirteenth century.
This was a life-changing event as it gave the individual the right to earn money through a trade or craft as a member of one of the venerable City of London's Livery Companies.
The Freedom also bestowed other valuable privileges including the right to herd sheep and other animals across London Bridge.
As Clerk of the Chamberlain’s Court at the City of London, Murray Craig is involved in historical research and in admitting people to the Freedom of the City today. Murray Craig is only the 37th Clerk since 1294 and is also a qualified City of London guide.
Doors open at 7.30pm for the sale of refreshments and publications and close at 8pm. The main doors have to be closed at that time for security reasons, so anyone arriving after then will be unable to gain access.
A donation of £2 is requested from non-members.
