“We want Rebel music, street music. Music that breaks down people’s fear of one another. Crisis music. Now Music. Music that knows who the real enemy is. Rock Against Racism. Love Music, Hate Racism.” -Temporary Hoarding magazine, 1977

Rock Against Racism was a campaign set up in the UK in 1976 as a response to a rise in racial conflict and the growth of white nationalist groups such as the National Front. The campaign involved pop, rock, punk and reggae musicians staging concerts with an anti-racist theme, in order to discourage young people from embracing racism. Attracting large crowds of more than 80,000 for a series of live gigs around the UK the grand finale was held in the Great Hall Alexandra Palace on 14th April 1979.

I’ve been going to band in a week for years. It’s super fun, which is why I keep coming back. It’s really contributed to building my confidence in showcasing my music and a great place to find diverse yet like-minded people!”
