Nick's business has been recommended a few times on HoL but I couldn't find a recent one. Having had to get a series of flyers printed at short notice this week, Nick was a pleasure to work with and turned around design and printing in a short time to a great level of quality and value. He comes with my highest recommendation.

It's worth a visit to see their Heidelberg press alone and I enjoyed this piece by Hugh from 2013.
The Romance of the Harringay Printertag:harringayonline.com,2013-05-24:844301:Topic:4930492013-05-24T22:16:24.679ZHughhttps://harringayonline.com/profile/hjuk

I've used Nicholas Printers in Pemberton Mews a few times previously, but for the past couple of weeks I've been in and out of the shop regularly getting some printing jobs done. The more I visit, the more I'm in thrall to this romantic little workshop tucked away behind Green Lanes.

The business was established over 50 years ago by the current owner's father when he arrived in Harringay from Cyprus. The man in int harness these days in Nick. Being around the businesses as he grew up, Nick has printing in his blood.

What Nick and his dad have created is a wonderful old fashioned printing shop. Make no mistake, the work they produce is first class, but there's something about the old fashioned craftsman in them and the way they work.

There are computers in the house but there's no defaulting to the latest gadget at Nicholas Printers. The two main machines are, let's say, tried and tested. Nick told me, "They simply haven't made anything better yet. So people tend to hang on to these old machines". Pointing to a clanking old Heidelberg, he said. "This one's over 50 years old. We keep it because it's simply the best at what it does."

Having borrowed Nick's sample book, I can second that emotion.

Earlier this week, I went back with my camera to try and capture something of the feel of the place and I've added a few pictures below. Here are machines you can smell!

And, by the way, as Liz discovered today, Nick is helpful, efficient and very reasonably priced. Certainly worth a try if you need to get printing done.

Last week I sent Nick a copy of this advert from the Harringay Ratepayers Association report from 1908. It seemed kinda appropriate. Nick wrote back saying, "When my dad started up he was using letterpress machinery where you put blocks together to form words. He threw it all away!".

"I know, I know, I'll change your ink cartridges. Then you'll like me'

Ink cartridge explodes in my hand. Fingers now covered in black ink. Switches printer back on for 10th time

REMOVE PAPER JAM

*Collapses into the foetal position, cursing all technology*

I have to collect the kids in 15 minutes, but then I have an idea. I'll go and speak to one of the printers on Green Lanes on my way there.

I enter Pemberton Mews and cautiously open the big door to the printers. A wonderful smell of new paper and printing ink hits me but it doesn't look like the kind of place that can do three copies of a dissertation in a hurry although a thousand leaflets clearly not a problem on the big, lovely printing machine

"Go upstairs," says the printer, "Nick will sort you out."

I explain my predicament. I've brought my document in the wrong format. "No problem", says Nick, "change it to a PDF, email it me. Give me a ring and I'll tell you if I can print it for you."

Collected children settled with a Milky Way and a computer game (harassed mother's secret weapons), I proceed to convert the document and send. "Yep," says Nick. Come and collect it. I'm here until 5"

When I pick it up, it's much better than anything my crappy home printer could have produced. High quality illustrations, posh paper, no wonky printing or smudged ink.

"A tenner" says Nick. I resist the temptation to throw my arms around him and hug him (just) and take my precious copies home for collation.

I vow to tell the world about this wonderful little business.

So that's what I'm doing.

Is it just me or does £1.99 per page sound excessive for scanning a document and putting it on a flash drive?

There would have been no printing involved and the only graft involved would have been using a couple of fingers to push a couple of buttons.

It felt like daylight robbery to me and I will therefore be using my work scanner tomorrow. Luckily I have an understanding boss. I would have preferred to send it today though and was prepared to pay a nominal amount for the service. it makes you wonder about their charges for other services. I certainly will not be visiting their shop again.
