Hi everyone! I've recently become involved in a scheme called the Loose Ends Project, which aims to have volunteers finish off craft projects left incomplete when their creator has died or become too ill/injured to complete them, as a way of helping their loved ones come to terms with their loss. It's a new project started in the US, but now has volunteer "finishers" signed up in 37 countries, including many in the UK, who are ready and waiting to finish projects that have been left…

Hi everyone! I've recently become involved in a scheme called the Loose Ends Project, which aims to have volunteers finish off craft projects left incomplete when their creator has died or become too ill/injured to complete them, as a way of helping their loved ones come to terms with their loss. It's a new project started in the US, but now has volunteer "finishers" signed up in 37 countries, including many in the UK, who are ready and waiting to finish projects that have been left behind.

The project covers all types of fibre arts - knitting, crochet, sewing (all kinds - quilting, embroidery, cross stitch, etc.), felting, and so on.

I'm attaching the flyer for the project, which has the official detail on how to submit a project to be finished or to sign up as a finisher, and I have paper flyers available if there are any groups or businesses out there who would like to display them. The project's website is here and please feel free to ask me any questions about the project you might have that aren't covered by the FAQ on there!
Wanted: sewing machine to borrow or buytag:harringayonline.com,2022-07-12:844301:Topic:14980182022-07-12T07:22:51.776ZDonna FThttps://harringayonline.com/profile/DonnaRoss

Our lodger has just finished a dressmaking course at Florentia Clothing Village and is keen to practice the new skills she's learned. My old and very basic IKEA machine is not up to much any more, so I wondered if anyone has a machine they don't use any more that they could lend us, or I could buy from you if you'd prefer to sell it.

My long winter coat has a very torn lining, far past my abilities to repair it! Can anyone recommend any sewing/repair shops (or dry cleaners etc that do repairs) they have used that are good at this kind of thing?

My teenage daughter has just got in to sewing and has been teaching herself during lockdown. She has a John Lewis mini sewing machine which is just not up for the job and we really do need to upgrade her to a proper sewing machine but I am not sure whether this is just a lockdown fad.

Do you have a sewing machine sitting around gathering dust? Would you be interested in lending it to my teenager or considering selling it?

As part of my ongoing networking, I like to discover other craft groups in Crouch End and surrounding areas. So it was lovely to meet Catherine Best and her Sewing Bee Volunteers last Friday. The group was held at the Hornsey Central Cafe inside the Hornsey Health Centre, Park Road. I received a warm and very enthusiastic welcome by the ladies who gave me instructions on what to do.

The aim of the session was to join up knitted or crocheted squares into strips and then the strips joined to make blankets for charity. I was amazed how many bags of squares had been donated by various volunteers in London and beyond. I learned that the blankets are returned to the charity, Knit for Peace in North London, then sent out to care homes, homeless and refugee charities and smaller blankets go to neonatal wards.

The Sewing Bee was started by Catherine, who coordinates the group. Catherine was the first to become involved in the Knit for Peace project and later her friends from the Crouch End Festival Chorus joined in.

The next Sewing Bee will be in a month’s time, Friday 18th October, from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm, at the Hornsey Central Cafe, Hornsey Health Centre, 151 Park Road, N8 8JD. Anyone is welcome to join these monthly meet ups. The only skills you need are sewing backstitch for joining squares and crochet stitches to create borders for the blankets. Although if you don’t know these, I’m sure a regular volunteer could show you.

This is a group I will definitely be returning to. Thanks to all the Sewing Bee Volunteers for assisting me and keep up the good work!
