Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had paint removed from a brick house before?

If you have  - are you able to recommend anyone who can do it locally and roughly how much it could cost to have the front of the house put back to the original bricks?

Many thanks

Simon

I'm looking into this too. Builders have suggested different methods; sandblasting, chemical stripping, stripping using heat. In choosing, we need to think about possible damage to the brickwork, and the health issue if the bottom layers of paint contain lead. There's some advice online here: www.oldhouseweb.com/how-to-advice/brick-houses.shtml (a US site but still relevant). We'll probably go for chemical stripping using fabric to lift the paint - UK products are described here: www.stripperspaintremovers.com/I_want_to_remove.htm#B1

Why not grow a green wall on top of it, much more pretty with no chemicals.

Massive undertaking but what a fun project and a whole new garden. :)

I can't wait for the first green skyscraper.

Hi - you can always try Mahon (mahonbrickwork.co.uk) - they're not cheap but the did an excellent job taking the pebble dash off our house and were very pleasant to work with too. They might do paint as well. I think we got the recommendation off Haringey Online too!

I wish you luck. I could cry at the abysmal ignorance of people who cover up the beauty of brick with paint. Brick is not only aesthetically pleasing, but allows moisture to be absorbed and then dry out. Painting can trap moisture and can result in frost damage. I really think it should be outlawed....seriously....

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Love the idea of a green wall!

I'll get in touch with mahon!

Much easier to

a) demolish house, wall by wall

b) reverse bricks, drying them out for a few days on the scaffolding

c) rebuild each wall in turn

d) repoint outside

e) replaster and redecorate inside.

Good luck!

lol!

Simon,

I highly recommend Evto. Facade restoration specialists. They did three houses on Duckett Road either side of the passage (you can't miss them). Highly skilled, high calibre of work and very reasonable. Very professional and pleasant to deal with. Removing paint can reveal problems with the underlying brickwork, which they are eminently qualified to deal with, if need be.

Thanks for that! I have always admired those houses - really superb. I'll get in touch
