Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just wondering if anyone has been to Cafe Tramp after all the pre-opening hype?

Yes, the decor is entertaining and cosy and the food good.  (Although the parsnip dessert could be something of an acquired taste).

The main issue is that, by Green Lanes standards, it is expensive. Unless you are a vegetarian, most of the mains are heading for £20.  (The chicken option is cheaper, but we were strongly recommended to have mashed potato with it, which added another fiver.)  So not a neighbourhood regular -- not for me at any rate.

I would worry that they have pitched their menu too high, but there were other diners, mostly quite young couples, on a Wednesday evening, so maybe they can pull it off.

Mash for a fiver!

Oh bother, we'll have people driving down Wightman Rd from Crouch End for this fare now that Le Bistro has closed.

I think it's odd that they don't have their menu on the website ... perhaps that's why?

I was left a bit disappointed by them not responding to the email they have on the website.  Was considering a booking for my Mothers birthday and requested for them to email me a menu but they didn't get back to me.

The menu is on their Facebook page.

Thanks Angela will have a little look

Search the forum. There's a detailed thread on initial feedback of first time diners.

Can you provide a link - I searched and ended up back here

Or use the hyperlinked tag under the initial posting above.

We went on Saturday and I wasn't very impressed tbh.

The look of the place is probably the best thing about it.

There were a lot of staff - possibly too many - but I'd only describe one of them as suitably friendly and competent, the rest varied from businesslike-but-not-very-warm to fairly useless. Two of our side dishes didn't arrive at the first time of asking and when I asked for another glass of wine I was brought an empty wine glass - I'm still trying to work out what that particular waiter thought I wanted it for!

As for the food, my steak was lukewarm at best, and the mixed leaf salad had a very strong dressing, something which I thought was mercifully out of fashion these days.

And the music was the cheesiest form of 80s elevator music until they admittedly improved things with what sounded like Pavarotti which at least felt more appropriate.

Lastly they add the 'discretionary' service on automatically, which I never like, and not at the customary 10% but 12%...

The owner was there entertaining a couple of female friends, and I thought he missed a trick not at least coming round and very informally saying hello and asking how we were finding things.

Better food, service and atmosphere is available locally at much cheaper prices so i think they have work to do... if you're still curious check it out yourself before taking friends/family there...
