On Saturday 4th June, at 2.30pm, David Lammy MP officially opened the free MoreFit Bootcamp which will run Saturdays throughout the year in Finsbury Park.
With sessions tailored for all ages and abilities, local residents are encouraged to come along and get fit while having fun.
MoreFit Bootcamp will run for 1 hour every Saturday at 2.30pm with participants working in three groups tailored to their fitness levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced. The sessions are designed to be fun and boost motivation by working out in a group environment.
The MoreFit trainers will also be on hand to provide advice on nutrition, weight loss and individual exercise plans. Kids’ Bootcamp, for children aged 8-16, will begin in late June.
David Lammy, MP for Tottenham said: “At a time when many people in the community are struggling financially, the MoreFit Bootcamp is a great initiative that will allow access to exercise for all without the need for expensive gym memberships. With nearly 1 in 4 adults suffering from obesity today, it’s important for us to look after ourselves and make sure exercise is a part of our weekly routine.”
Shamir Sidhu, 33, founder of local business MoreFit, said: “It can be hard to stay healthy these days when many of us have sedentary jobs and rely on processed foods. I believe that exercise is essential to maintaining balance in life – it helps to combat stress, fight depression and boost self-esteem. I’ve set up the free Bootcamp in Finsbury Park with the MoreFit team to give everyone the opportunity to get involved; whether you’re already a keen exercise enthusiast or feeling really out of shape, come and train with us every Saturday and I guarantee you’ll see results over the summer.”
Local resident Lorna Hoey,65, who attended MoreFit kick-off sessions in the park in May said: “Determined to get fit in my retirement years, I nevertheless went along to the Bootcamp feeling a bit nervous. I found myself in a large group of friendly people of all ages. Thankfully there's no military-style shouting involved, and the emphasis is on fun. The instructor for my beginners group was quite happy to allow me to ‘sit out’ any exercise I felt was too demanding, while at the same time encouraging everyone to push themselves a little. For me, who hated exercise, the fact that I really enjoyed it came as a welcome surprise and after four weeks I can definitely feel the difference!”
According to the NHS, the latest Health Survey for England (HSE) data shows us that nearly 1 in 4 adults, and over 1 in 10 children aged 2-10, are obese. In 2007, the Government-commissioned Foresight report predicted that if no action was taken, 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children would be obese by 2050. Obesity can have a severe impact on people’s health, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and heart and liver disease. There is also a significant burden on the NHS - direct costs caused by obesity are estimated to be £4.2 billion per year and forecast to more than double by 2050 if we carry on as we are.
