Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

At this time of celebrations and eating out, it might be time to revisit the list of food outlets on Green Lanes who are not providing even a basic level of hygiene for their customers.

There are a few surprises in the list below and also possible answers to some recent posts (Flame v Selale).

Green Lanes doesn't come out of the Food Standards Agency's inspections any worse than other areas in terms of its food hygiene, but it there are some persistent offenders (some of the more popular places).

Below is a list of those businesses scoring a 1(major improvement necessary) or a 2 (improvement necessary).

At the bottom is a further list of those "very good" outlets which scored 5

I have limited the list to those inspected within the last 12mths.

On the whole, I agree with your response and I'm not saying that we shouldn't have the info at all - I'm just saying that I don't think that having it in isolation is helpful and could be damaging to businesses that have taken steps to improve because we all have a tendency to just accept the black and white "facts" without looking at anything else if we don't think about it properly (I have relatives who have a tendency to believe everything they read in the newspapers just because it's in print, without reading a contrasting opinion or even thinking about it, which infuriates me regularly - not that I'm disputing the veracity of the information you posted, I'm just highlighting a facet of human nature!)

Personally, I would like to see hygiene more rigorously monitored so that inspections happen much more frequently and then a post like your original one would be much more informative and helpful because it would have up-to-date information; in addition, those inspections would include monitoring of the display of the ratings stickers so that restaurants couldn't get away with displaying the old ones.  Unfortunately, in the current economic climate, I doubt we're going to see more frequent inspections any time soon (and if the cost were pushed onto the businesses directly, a lot more (good and bad) small restaurants would go under).

I know where you're coming from, Bethany. I too felt a slight discomfort at seeing potentially damaging information laid out. BUT, whatever I may feel this is public service information and we probably ought not to shy away from it.

Having said that, I'm very glad that you've commented and pointed out that there may be additional information that helps build up a more complete picture. For me, this is when platforms like this are at their best - when a genuinely open sense of enquiry, absent of sharp elbows, helps us all to a better understanding.

Why would this post turn into a conversation?

I've installed the Foodgov app on my phone I'm quite glad of it.  I went to one of the Korean restaurants near Tottenham Court Road and I really wish I'd checked the app first.  We saw a mouse scuttle across the floor when we were waiting for the bill.  The waiter just shrugged his shoulders about it.

Then I read reviews online saying someone had their bill delivered with a cockroach on it, so I counted myself lucky!

Checked the food hygiene score when I got home: 0.  Inspected November 2012 and not since... I didn't think it was possible for a restaurant to get 0 and remain open, especially not for so long without a re-inspection.

All publicly available information from the Food Standards Agency, from inspections carried out by local authorities.
