Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Most people are eligible for free insulation through the Cert scheme. If you want it, best to act now since the scheme under which this offer is made is due to end at the end of 2012 at the latest.

The offers are funded through a government-backed scheme called the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (Cert) which required the energy companies to work towards energy efficiency. Consumers all pay for this scheme through a levy on energy bills.

To qualify, you must own your home and have less than 60mm of lost insulation already in place. The insulation must also cover at least a third or your loft space.

Vulnerable customers, such as the elderly in receipt of the state pension credit or on specific benefits, are also eligible for further perks.

If you do not own your home then you can ask the supplier for a form for your landlord to sign to fit the insulation.

I can't vouch for how they work, but the web seems packed with websites broking connections to local fitters. I threw caution to the wind and tried out www.insulationgrants.info.

Alternatively you can contact one of the Big Six energy companies direct. You don't have to be a customer. (Contacts here on the Which page - don't be put off by the eligibility criteria. Everyone I've contacted says these no longer apply as the energy companies seek to sepnd their required amounts by the end of the year - but do check!)

Hugh,

Thank you for the information.  I have just applied for the grant on www.insulationgrants.info.  I'l see what comes of it.  Someone from a company called Apex Aims is going to be in contact with me within the next 5 days to arrange a survey.

I'll let you know what the outcome is....

Katherine

Thanks for this!  We wanted to report our successful (and free, despite not ticking any 'vulnerable' categories) experience with our loft.  We filled out the form online, had a phone call from Capital Energy Solutions the next day, someone around to look the loft over a few days later, and this morning an energetic guy came and put down fluffy yellow insulation over our 1890s scree.  They charge the council directly so it was painless (well except for emptying the loft of the previous owners' archeaological detrius!).
